"Avalon Means Magical Island!"
Hola! We enjoyed two weeks at Avalon on Isla. I would go back there in a heartbeat. Looking at rates now and was reminded that I did not review yet for others to find and discover such an amazing place. First of all, we have a beautiful, comfortable home and what we seek on vacation primarily is location, safety, cleanliness, and proximity to the ocean and snorkeling. We secured a villa with kitchenette, and a beautiful balcony overlooking playa Norte and nice large bathroom. We shopped at Chederaui as recommended and stocked up our villa with water and beer and rum and were left a note describing how we could only imbibe our drinks and consume our food in our room, and not anywhere else on property. Okay. Whatever. We rented a car from the airport, and it was our first time renting in mexico after hearing all the horror stories of police shakedowns on the roads. It was a good move, except that you must take Mexican insurance, and that cost was $500.00. So it was worth it. We drove to the ferry outside cancun after driving in cancun madness it was great to be on the ferry viewing the delicious turquoise waters again. We drove off the ferry easily and drove to Avalon and across the sweet wooden bridge to Avalon. I can still hear the boards heaving underneath our car. What a great sound! So as we pull up to the 4 spot parking area, most people do not rent cars for isla, and were met graciously with security, a bellman to carry our luggage to our room and we felt very welcomed. We entered the lobby for check-in, that we came to call the sweatlodge, as there was no airconditioning and I was wishing they would just open the doors to the winds. It is also the only free area to utilize Wi-Fi, and encountered a professional, but less than friendly employee. We tipped him our usual checkin $20.00 for an upper villa for views, but though the resort seemed rather empty he said he could not accommodate, but in the end, the lower villa was perfect. Avalon is located on the extreme north end of the island and our villa overlooked the beach where all the daytrippers and yachts come to wade into the beach clubs and the diveboats and whaleboat tours pick up all the tourists. It sounds busy, and it is but, the thick walls of the villas gave us the most beautiful rest and I loved seeing the people happy and smiling and the families thrilled with the calm beach on one side and waves on the other side of the wooden bridge. On Avalon site there is the king's bath which held more than you can imagine if you take the time to look. It is totally safe for children and if the surf is rough, the employees close it and lock the gate. It is only for patrons of Avalon and I miss it. It was considered Low-season when we went, but I do not think I would enjoy high-season. I loved the relaxed pace and safety of the island and the ability to actually get to know people that live there and those travelers from a myriad of countries that found Isla and return again and again. I want to state that we are seasoned travelers, having been to mexico many times and Hawaii and many points in the Caribbean. There is something about Isla though it is a small island, five miles in all, that satisfies your soul. We enjoyed our car with sweet airconditioning, as it is Very hot, and the car was a yummy respite as we dodged all the drunken golfcarts and mopeds and motorcycles. Gas was nearly zippo and it was great to shop and to be able to get our food back to the villa without it melting! We found the villa to be well-maintained and clean and our maid service was perfect. We did not order room service or eat in the restaurant at all, as we stalked all the island's restaurants for variety. We did love the chef at Fenix and I think ate the whole menu. Say hello to Jackie the beautiful server from Canada! She was so wonderful and gave us lots of referrals for all we wanted to do and introduced us to the best smoky Mezcal! Tiquila is so not the thing anymore lol. What we loved most about Avalon is the secure perfect location on the ocean with only a short walk to the pool, water, ocean, into town for shopping, the bank ATM, the Ultramar Ferry, all the restaurants and shopping so close by. I am homesick for isla and I guess I will end this review and merely say, Just goooooo.
I am looking at other hotels for our upcoming trip, but I do not feel that I would have the same experience overall we had at Avalon. A
little Snorkeling Post Script, Amazing snorkeling,
go to the knock off Garrafon Reef location, $5 bucks and its perfect. But snorkeling by the hotel on the wavy side also has great fish to enjoy. I saw starfish I had never seen before and schools of fish in such a healthy ocean environment.
What a pleasure, I wish I could wake up tomorrow, grab my snorkel and mask and walk into the perfectly-undulating turquoise waves of
