DO NOT EVEN BOTHER KEEP LOOKING!!!!

It's "very cheap" for a reason. The resort does NOT have AC! They will tell you that it's a general outage and that it happened "yesterday" but it turns out that that's what they tell everyone no matter what day they come in. The resort just doesn't have functioning AC. And who wants to go on vacation and have a hard time getting ready, sleeping... etc it was absolutely terrible. I was originally given a third floor to stay but I argued and argued until they finally switched my room. It being the third floor meant the hottest room plus think about all the walking you do to get to your room to then walk up 36 stairs (yes we counted it was so hot) to then enter a sauna. We finally got switched to a second floor (also no AC) but the fan was atleast closer to the bed so we did get more air. The room wasn't cold but it was much cooler than our last room. It's very unfortunate because it has such beautiful landscape. They have a great entertainment group. They do lots of activities by the pool and in the theatre. The one thing we can't complain about is the food it was shockingly good. Of course the restaurants didn't have very strong AC but they were cooler than our room for sure. We enjoyed all of them we didn't have any complains. Also, the beach wasn't very clean there was many rocks and a ton of seaweed. We spent most of our time in the pool. The pool was nice, clean there was always people coming around cleaning up cups from the bar. I hope this helps, Goodluck!

No Air Conditioning, Sewage Smell. Disappointed

Pros: Pool was large. The landscaping was beautiful. The beach was very clean.
Cons: The rooms are very hot. AC did not work. The smell of sewage was overwhelming in the rooms and around many buildings. Golf was not included as advert
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. The pool was clean and large and provided lots of activities in the afternoon. The beach was beautiful, clean with lots of chairs. That is about the extent of the pros for this resort. The cons to this resort surely outnumber the pros. Check in was extremely slow – took about 90 minutes. The air conditioning didn’t work well in any of our rooms. At night our room temp dropped to 28.6 C (83 F). The ceiling fans were always on and the curtains were closed all the time, but it was still very hot. The AC unit rattled and made lots of noise. We reported the problem but nothing was fixed. Housekeeping was a joke. The floors were always sandy. The bath towels were not replaced when left on the floor, instead they were hung back up. No washcloths provided. The sewage smell in one of our rooms was absolutely gross. The gross smell was also in the stairwells as well as between many of the buildings. Three times we didn’t have water in the room to shower or flush the toilets. Golf is NOT included. Travelocity, Expedia, and Orbitz list Golf as being included. It is NOT. Cost is $75 per person for 9 holes. Food at the buffet was terrible. Don’t book “Privileged”. It is a waste of money. As a “privileged guest” you get two beach towels in your room which they won’t exchange at the towel hut. You have access to an additional beach bar. Lastly you get a separate area to sit at the buffet. Not worth $89 per night.

Good hotel to stay in.

Pros: The tropical landscapes and different sitting areas.
Cons: More lawn chairs on the beach, English speaking employees, and better wifi in the rooms.
Location: Nothing around the resort.
My overall experience was good. The hotel is decent. The food, drinks, beach, and rooms were all good. I love the hammock in the balcony. That's a plus for me. I love the landscapes and all the little sitting areas. The beach is beautiful. Remember to come early or get your chairs secure ahead of time. They filled up quick. I wish they could put more lawn chairs out. We came to the beach late and had a hard time finding chairs. Don't go to the Travel Exclusive Club presentation. It's a timeshare. A waste of our 2 hours time.

Nice resort for an all inclusive vacation

We stayed for 5 days and 4 nights, overalll we found the experience at the resort exceptionally pleasant. We booked the vacation at beginning of November to avoid rush season, the rate is reasonable, weather is warm and sunny, hotel staff is extremely helpful, which makes our stay such a pleasant experience. The room is cleaned daily, the furnitures are bit of old and uncomfortable, but fortunately we didn't stay at the room that much. The dining at buffett has plenty of selection for lunch and breakfast, we enjoyed some tropical fruits that were rarely used before. For dinner, the staff are exteremely helpful, I like the Yuca and American much better. The japanese and italian dinner are somewhat to be desired. The beach is in nice condition, I enjoyed swim and shed at the beach very much. There are also activities such as beach vollyeball, soccer, kayak, dance, etc. I've seen reviews about the seaweeds at the beach, there are a little bit, but should not bother anyone. Above all, I'd like to say the staff at the resort are the best, attentive, and very helpful, albeit most time on the tropical clock.

I can only say nice things about this Hotel.

Pros: Everything.
Cons: Clean the beach of sea weeds. They need to do it every other day.
The only thing that was below average is the beach. They need to clean it of sea weeds to make the experience a great one. Everything else is good. From the food to the staff. I plan to come back with my family.

Nice resort!

We loved this resort. Not a lot of choices for really picky eaters. Beautiful beach and a really friendly staff. Most spoke pretty good English. They were very helpful! We went on the buggie excursion and swam with sharks which was really fun!!

Valentine's Day 2015

Pros: food, our room location on the property, staff
Cons: overall maintenance more frequent servicing of the mini bar less selling from staff and vendors on property
Location: short distance from the airport and golf casino on property
This was our 8th or 9th trip to Punta Cana. We always go all-inclusive and try to stay where we can get the best value (price for amenities) for our time frame and/or try something new, which is why we selected the Catalonia this year. This is not one of our "would definitely return" destinations. While the distance from the airport is relatively short, staff was very accommodating, and we had only one issue with our room, (that was never resolved), the overall age of the resort is showing. Beach and pool lounges were an issue unless you staked your claim early in the morning. Our hand-held shower head didn't sit properly in the wall cradle, so it literally was a hand-held shower all week. We reported it three times but with no results. Our electronic entry safe stopped working but was resolved with a set of new batteries after 3 trips from the security/maintenance man. (And yes, there is a master key that allows them to unlock your safe when the batteries fail!) Would not repeat the vacation option sales presentation - not worth the free gift. Also - many more sales people on this property than we had ever encountered before. The food was good, our trip was very relaxing. Overall we had a good time and would not turn down the opportunity to stay here again, but we would probably try somewhere else next time.

Don't ignore the bad reviews...

Where do we begin? A week before we arrive I sent an email to the hotel to request 2 twin beds since myself and a friend were traveling together (with no response). We were traveling for a friend’s wedding and did not stay at the sister hotel (Catalonia Royal) since they did not have the option for 2 beds. When we checked-in (at about 3:30pm) our room was not ready so we were told to come back to the desk in an hour and our room would be ready. At this time I confirmed with gentlemen at the desk that the room that we were getting had 2 beds as I requested, he said yes “absolutely”. Fast forward an hour (actually over an hour), we returned to the front desk where they are calling out names for patrons whose rooms were ready one at time. So there we are with 100+ people pushing our way to see if our name gets calling when all of the staff leaves the front desk to go in the back. Finally, 2 hours later after various names have been called and we’re still waiting, the fellow we were dealing with comes out of the back and I flag him down to check on the status of our room. He says it’s ready and gives us 3 keys for 2 people (he states one of them is for good luck). The bell hop drives us to our villa and we proceed up to a room on the 3rd and final floor (Room 3027 - remember this room number for later) where none of the keys work. The bell hop turns to me and says you’ll have to go back downstairs and to the front desk to get the keys fixed. Luckily housekeeping was nearby and let us into the room where we find that there is one King sized bed instead of 2 twins. The room was pretty large and nice. The mini bar was fully stocked and there was a separate shower from the tub which was nice in case we both wanted to get ready at the same time. We did notice that there were a lot of little tiny almost see through bugs on the desk where the coffee pot was and did not use that area or coffee pot the entire stay because of it. We try to log on to the WIFI from my Blackberry, my iPod, my friend’s phone, and her Kindle to no avail. We enter the bathroom and find there are no washcloths. We also find that there is we were not given the lock or key to the safe in the room. First we call guest services and get no answer (rings then connects to another line and rings then goes to a voicemail box that is all in Spanish). I finally get through to a gentleman and start asking a few things that we need and after I explained that our WIFI in the room didn’t work he said it did. When I told him we tried a few different things on different devices he said it must be the device and to bring it down. As I was trying to explain that all of our devices worked outside our room he hung up before hearing the additional requests. Once we got settled in we headed down to get the keys fixed, get someone to bring washcloths, get the King Sized bed switched out for two twins, see about the WIFI and get an iron/iron board since we had a wedding to go the next afternoon. They said someone would be right up. Well, the only thing we got was the keys situation fixed. Actually on 2 separate occasions, both of our keys randomly stopped working and had to be reset (the last time it happened, they deactivated the keys we had and gave us 2 new ones instead of just fixing the one that wasn’t working). There was also an issue with local vendors being on the resort grounds selling jewelry and other crafts. They were very expensive and high pressure. They were also unfortunately located right between the villas and the front desk area so unfortunately every time I had to go to get an issue resolved with our room I was hassled by the vendors to buy something from their table. The next morning on our way back up to the room from breakfast, my friend requested the iron/iron board again (by this time we figured everything else was a lost cause) and they said someone would bring it right up. Fast forward to a half hour before the wedding, my friend calls down to guest services and explains that she had requested the iron/iron board the day before and earlier that morning. The gentleman asked her when did she need it by and she said as soon as possible since the wedding was in a half hour (3pm). He proceeded to tell her that she waited too late. Needless to say she went to the wedding in a different dress but when we returned to the room… we had an iron/ironing board. We meet back up with the bride and she says that she had left us a hand written note at the front desk to be delivered to us the day before to let us know that there was a get together Friday afternoon (the staff assured her that it would be delivered right away) and that she had called our room and left messages (neither of which we got). In the middle of the night found myself running to the bathroom every hour and luckily I bought Pepto-Bismol pills with me just in case because judging by some of the other people who got sick while they were there and had to buy medicine at the resort that didn’t work I fared better. I was better by about 5 am but still took it easy with the breakfast the next morning. Speaking of the next morning, we were getting ready for a day of relaxation to find that our ceiling was leaking water from all the rain from overnight. So I was back down to front desk to request that it be fixed or be allowed to switch rooms since we still had not gotten our bed situation cleared. I was told that all the rooms were booked and that they could not move us but they didn’t send someone to fix (or drain the water from the ceiling). The ceiling bulges, which leads me to believe that there is a roof problem and that it’s done it before and it will do it again (remember Room 3027 – beware!!). Once down near the pool area, we were constantly harassed by workers to book our excursions through them only (supposedly for the best deals). Sometimes we were hassled by the same person who didn’t realize they had just talked to us earlier. We had booked an excursion online and when we relayed that we had already booked an excursion and weren’t interested he ask which guy and that we should only book through him for the best price and that he wouldn’t get any money. On Monday night we are getting ready for dinner when randomly an envelope is slipped until our door… Finally the note that we were supposed to get on Friday! Tuesday was fantastic as we were away from the hotel on an all day excursion and the next day was great since we were leaving. In general the staff that provided food and drinks was great and the beach and pool were really nice and well maintained. The food, however, was not always great. The first place we ate at was the Mexican restaurant. The food was cold and seemed to be pre-cooked and then reheated a bit before bringing out to us. The sauce used at Italian restaurant tasted like something out of a can. The best place we ate at (our last night there) was the Japanese restaurant which was quite a bit more upscale and the food was certainly plentiful. The sushi could have been better but at least it was edible and didn’t make me sick. There were some activities throughout the day to get involved with and the night entertainment was entertaining. As long as we dealt with everyone else outside of guest services at our hotel we were fine (even the staff at the sister hotels Privileged and Royal were accommodating). At some point the light in the bathroom stopped working (so if you shut the door for privacy it was dark) and there was one day when our room was not cleaned until the evening. We did not bring this up to the quest services staff since all the other encounters were so bad and they seemed to not care. I really didn’t think about it at the time but once I was back in the states I had a lot of weird looking bites (and so did my friend but I thought they were from mosquitoes until remember that I didn't actually see any mosquitoes nor do I remember getting bit which leads me to believe that we had bed bugs (in our one King sized bed)!

Good but could be better...

Overall our experience was good. Let me start with the negatives. After an hour of being in our room we developed a leak over the Jacuzzi and from the air conditioning system. We called the front desk and it took forever for someone to come check it out. Even after someone came the leaks still continued all weekend long. We never got to use the Jacuzzi and that was disappointing. The hotel needs maintenance and a lot of old pipes need to be fixed (hence all the leaks). If you go to the privileged side (which we did when they tried to get us to purchase their version of a time share) You will see that it is beautiful and very well maintained. It’s sad that they don’t put as much effort and money into the regular side as they do the privileged, more people would be happier when they left. The 24 hour snack bar wasn’t good they had French fries and chicken in the oven that wasn’t fresh. The casino is dated and a lot of the machines weren’t working, but we did manage to win $50 so that was a plus. Now to the positives we were greeted by all the staff upon arrival and got our “welcome drink” (which was delicious) We met a nice man by the name of Alejandro (he is truly one of the nicest people I have ever met) He told us everything we needed to know upon arrival and assured us if we needed anything to let him know (and we did and he was more than happy to help). The rest of the staff were equally as nice from the maintenance people, maids, bartenders, entertainers etc. The buffets were good for breakfast and lunch. The Japanese restaurant was okay (not what we expected), The steakhouse was amazing as well as the Italian restaurant (my favorites) and the drinks were good too. The pool area was great (but the chairs are old) it was clean and well taken care of and the swim up bar was awesome! The entertainment was great, they really worked hard to keep everyone entertained and happy. The disco was fun but they played the same music every night and by the last night I knew the routines. We met Jacqueline for breakfast to go over the whole time share plan and her partner Fernando (later on) who showed us the privileged side in regards to their version of a time share. What I loved about them was that they weren’t pushy and didn’t try to sell something that wasn’t realistic they tried to work with us but we just weren’t ready to make a commitment. Maybe next time because we definitely plan on returning BUT staying on the privileged side now that we know it is the better side. I would like to Thank everyone who tried and made our stay one to remember.
