culture hotel for Hispanic experience

Pros: lots of room space
Cons: beach
The hotel was surprisingly better then the reviews! This hotel is very catered to the actual Latin culture. Very strong cultural events and food. If you want to experience the Mexican culture, this is the place to be. It also provides excellent accommodation to people all over the world. The English from the crew members were great. They tried to understand and solve whatever issues. The beach itself surrounding the hotel was the only downside of this wonderful place.

Treated Like Royalty!

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Quiet, friendly staff
My best friend and I stayed here a few years ago & had the best budget gals week ever!! The staff was very attentive and kind ( and no--we aren't Mexican--we are American) and our favorite concierge/bellman always had helpful tips for us on siteseeing and things to do. We didn't check in thinking this was the Ritz Carlton--we knew it was an economy hotel. We encountered NO bugs & our housekeeper was there every morning w/towels & anything we needed. Then again, my best friend & I treat people the way we like to be treated--we don't treat hotel staff like slaves. Maybe that's part of the reason we had such an awesome experience at the Aquamarina! I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. As to the "uncomfortable" beds--I slept like a baby. Not sure what kind of beds/mattresses all these little princes/princesses are accustomed to!! This resort is definitely for those of us who don't plan on "living" in our hotel. My friend & I were more interested in taking in old, downtown Cancun than being waited on hand & foot,so if you're looking for laidback the Aquamarina will do very nicely, thank you!!

Place was fine.

The room had a small kitchen with fridge which was helpful since we did not do the all inclusive. Staff was very friendly and helpful. A crying baby arrived next door one night, so we requested a new room. Staff took care of our request with speed. Both rooms had beautiful ocean views and were very clean and attractive. Didn't get any noise from the surrounding rooms except for the baby one night, which was not the hotel's fault. One meal eaten at the restaurant was average in both quality and price, but then we went out for the day most days and ate downtown a lot. Had low internet usage rates of approx. $* per 10 minutes. Helpful Oxxo (convenience store) across street and bus stop in front of hotel. I will return there. Safe in room for our use was free. Beach not the best, but beaches in Mexico are all open to the public and you could go next door to another better beach if you wanted.

Not for Americans

Overall I had a great time on vacation with my family; however, I would never recommend this resort to anyone other than Mexican heritage and/or spanish speaking people...as they are the only ones who get true service....drinks brought to them around the pool, etc. Americans don't...you have to get up and get your own drink; and, beware...the bars close earlier for you!!!!! The food wasn't bad, but be prepared to eat the same thing all week for a limited amount of time.....and get bad service even if you tip good. Certain things are not available to you (like soda for breakfast) that is unless you are Mexican. And....be prepared to pay for broken things that you did not break.....while on vacation a pool sign had gotten broken...right away it was my cousins fought even though he had been in bed during the supposed time of the incident (that is all 4 different times given). Everyone that was with him tried to explain what had happened...but they didn't want to hear it. 4 different guards gave 4 different stories as to what happened...all ridiculous and impossible in nature...but still we were made to pay or go to jail! And after....all the staff and guards sat around us callling us gringos and pointing and laughing in my cousin's face. They said that we would be sorry for writing a bad review. At that time we had found out that 4 other americans had had stuff stolen from their room and had incidences such as us. Bottom line....DON'T TRUST ANY OF THE WORKERS. O and beware of the cock roaches and maides just walking in your room even when the do not disturb sign is out. PS one cock roach was placed under my door by a security guard....!!!

Location Best

We were a group of 20 with 5 rooms. We requested all together and ocean view and we did not get that. The beds are very hard and the quilts are rough. The showers (only) are horrible. Leaks all over the bathroom floor. The beach is Marina side and that is what it is. Seaweed galore. The outdoor entertainment was okay , best when XYZ was on duty. The indoor entertainment was okay. Pools were good - hot tubs were not hot but both closed just at dark - too early. 2 1/2 star I guess is correct. All should be treated equal.

NEVER GO HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all the rooms have bugs in them and the beds are like sleeping on bricks and we needed roomservice everyday and they only came like 2 days out of the week stay we had to keep asking for towels ..etc.. the food was the same exact thing everyday just cooked a different way and put a diferent name on it and made several or my family members sick and vomited.. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone not even if they were desperate .

Deceived

The rooms are a bit rundown. There is nothing special about the room. It's literally beds w/ a counter space and a bathroom that smells like mildew. There are not any drawers and not really a real safe. We had expected a little bit better than what we got. I would recommend only booking 5 stars in Cancun.

o.k. for the money

aquamarina is a older hotel on the end of the hotel zone. It can use some improvements in all areas but all in all it's ok... after reading the other reviews we weren't expecting much... it's not the Ritz. It's just very basic, but all in all we had a BLAST!!!
