The house maintenance people do an excellent job, the bartenders and all the people that work the kitchen and restaurants are awesome. Entertainment people give a great show. Overall I would give at least 5 stars to this resort.

We booked a king size bed with reservations well in advance and we got a room with 2twin size beds pushed together. Who sleeps in the crack? Looks like the strike plate on the door was recently replaced and had to be adjusted a bit because part of the wood on the door trim was broken and missing.. obviously this room was broken into to and the hotel was too cheap to replace the door and surrounding trim. Made us feel all warm and cozy for our 7 night stay. Locking the deadbolt was tricky and we had to lift and move the door to one side to get it to lock. Hotel was full and no changes could be made. The toilet area was separate and smaller than bathroom on a plane. Even my wife who is petite almost hit her knees on the door while sitting on the toilet. It’s that small and tight.. and everything is old. Rooms very outdated. Opening and closing patio door is also a treat.. screen ripped and door is warped. We will not stay there again. Staff was friendly and food was good. Beach was nice. Otherwise this would be 1 star rating at best.

From the moment we arrived, every team member was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. The front desk staff made check-in smooth and stress-free, always ready to help with a smile. Housekeeping was impeccable—our room was spotless every day, and small thoughtful touches made us feel truly cared for. The restaurant and bar staff deserve special recognition. They were professional, friendly, and consistently went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and satisfied. Whether it was remembering our preferences, offering recommendations, or simply making us feel valued, their dedication truly stood out. What impressed us most was how authentic and personal the service felt. The staff didn’t just do their jobs—they made us feel like guests, not just tourists. That level of hospitality is rare and made our stay memorable. Riu Palace Mexico is a beautiful resort, but it’s the people who make it exceptional. Very Disappointing Stay We stayed at Riu Palace Mexico, Playa del Carmen, expecting a 5-star all-inclusive experience, but it was extremely disappointing. Our first room was dirty and poorly maintained — broken bathroom, heavy dust everywhere, and very old, worn furniture. We immediately requested a room change. Even after we paid extra for an upgraded room, we were told we still had to wait 24 hours before being moved. When we were finally placed in the upgraded room the next day, the situation became even worse. That evening, after returning from dinner and turning on the lights, around 20 cockroaches ran across the room. It was absolutely disgusting. I am attaching photos and videos as proof. I tried calling the service desk multiple times that night, but no one answered. The next morning, management again told us to wait another 24 hours, which we refused. After several hours, we were moved to a different room. By then, three of our six vacation days were lost. The front desk staff and management were unhelpful and dismissive. When we asked for compensation, they offered a free massage, which did not address the seriousness of the issue. RIU corporate referred us to Expedia, since we booked through them, and we are still waiting for a response. The food was mediocre and mostly tasteless, including the Christmas Eve dinner. The beach was nice, but there was no beach service, towels were old and limited to one per person.

We had a great time at Riu Palace! The staff are so welcoming. They work so hard to make your stay great! The grounds are well kept. The room was clean and beds comfortable. The food is amazing! The buffet has a great variety each day and the food gets replenished often. My kids loved the chocolate fountain. Each day there’s a different type of chocolate in the fountain. I loved the seafood variety. We ate at the steakhouse restaurant onsite and had a delicious lobster. We ate at the Japanese restaurant and liked the food. It’s a first come, first served which worked well. We never had to wait. There were some fun times at the pool such as the bingo games, foam party and the gymnastics show. Javi is a great server by the pool side. He remembered our names and what we like to drink. We loved the Riu white party over at Riu Tequila across the road. Early in the evening there’s face painting and balloons. It cost $10 US taxi to get from the playa del Carmen ferry to the Riu resort. I suggest dealing in pesos. There is a laundry service available. You have to pay by the item so it can really add up. So we didn’t use it. There’s a lot of laundry to do with a family. Too bad there wasn’t a self serve laundry room or a pay by the bag service. The beach was great. There’s lots of people swimming in front of the resort. The ocean is warm and has clear turquoise water. The sand is white and fluffy. I didn’t see many shells or fish. We can’t wait to stay here again!
