    California Hotel Travel Guide

Perhaps it’s understandable that the most populous state in the nation has a bit of a split personality. Southern California is a place of golden skies and even more golden surfers. Northern California is heaven for techies, sports fans, and nature lovers (it’s a diverse place!). Wherever you end up, with a hotel in California you’re sure to find gorgeous scenery and a “go-with-the-flow” mentality.

    From SF to LA

There’s no better way to get into the Cali groove than a cruise on the Pacific Coast Highway. Listen to the ocean below as you wind through Big Sur, then take a break and walk to the McWay Waterfall, which cascades to the beach below in a picture-perfect scene. You’ll soon know what author Henry Miller meant when he wrote, “This is the face of the earth as the Creator intended it to look”—and it’s not just the landscape that will impress you. California hotels take it up a notch in Big Sur, with clifftop views and rustic fireside lodges. If you enjoy cell phone service, however, head to the cities to the north or south. Hotels in Los Angeles are a good bet for city lovers. This California metropolis has it all, from first-rate restaurants to street tacos and Broadway plays to beach drum circles. For Northern Cali flavor, get cultured in San Francisco, where you can check out the nation’s oldest Chinatown and take the perfect profile pic at the Golden Gate Bridge.

    "Close to the metro!"
Room was small but had everything you needed. Breakfast was excellent. Never made it back to the hotel in time for the complimentary happy hour. The hotel is one block from the metro so you can essentially go anywhere in LA for $1.75 each direction. We even took to to the airport and saved $75 on cab fare! The hotel was generally nice and staff was quick with check in and out. I'd go back.

    "Hollywood Bowl"
Moved to this hotel from a hotel in Hollywood near the Hollywood Bowl to be closer to the airport because I had an early flight the next morning and didn't want to drive across town to catch my flight. The hotel is within walking distance to most of the rental car companies, just drop off your bags at the hotel first then drop off the car. Got a free upgrade at check in, the room was on the 11 fl and very nice. The staff was helpful and friendly, it's the closest hotel to LAX and has a 24 hr shuttle to the airport. The price was fair and reasonable and a good value. I would stay there again.

    "Hotel review"
Not as I remembered it form the many years ago, updates cold and contrived.... Lighting in room horrible and lacking, drapery hardware did not function, very noisy even on the 13th floor..... huge pillar in front of door, bad vibes. Chairs so uncomfortable. The bed and linens were wonderful, including the towels. Nasty old phone wall jack in bathroom, it had toilet paper stuck in the jack part, gross.

"Honest hotel with beautiful historic feel"
We stayed at this hotel as a family. The hotel has a historic charm. The rooms are small but clean. We forgot to load our luggage into the car but when we called the hotel they had turned it into lost and found and we were able to retrieve our luggage without any hassle. I would recommend staying here to anyone!

    "In town for work"
My overall stay was very enjoyable. The hotel is older and is in need of a renovation, but it was very comfortable. It was reasonably priced and in the heart of Union Square. An easy walk to BART and the convention center. I enjoyed breakfast and dinner at the Daily Grill, which is attached to the hotel. The food was delicious and priced right for the portions. I would stay here again on my next visit to the city.

    "Convenient to airport and downtown"
The hotel is walking distance from the airport and easy biking distance to downtown, Point Loma and SeaWorld. Much of the hotel is really great, rooms are large and clean, staff friendly and helpful and there is a shuttle between the hotel and airport. A few minor annoyances - no fridge in the room, there is a sign saying you need to call to have one sent up if you need one. No soda machines on the floors, they want you to use the minibar fridge instead, which you are not allowed to use to store your own goods. Last, there are two separate towers to this hotel and while they are only a five minute walk apart, I had to walk to both to find which one I was staying in. Would have been nice to have them communicate that to me prior to arrival to save me that trouble. Would stay there again and will plan to as I am in San Diego at least once a year or so.

    "Wonderful location right on Embarcadaro!"
All rooms have balcony or patio, a nice plus. I have stayed here many times over the years since it was a Holiday Inn many years ago. In the last year I have stayed about six times. It seems as if Tower III is a stepchild of sorts. Parked in the garage to find the elevator not working so had to schlep my bags down the ramp. The Wifi is anything but high speed. Dial up would put the service to shame and it is pretty much useless. Tried to call the customer service and gave up after a half hour on hold. Upon arrival I was early and told I could have a room in Tower III but the heat wasn't working. Of course I opted to wait for a room with heat. Several hours later my room was ready ..... in Tower III! I asked if the heat worked now and was assured it did. I unpacked. Did some work and took a nap. Woke to a freezing room! Called and old them I was going out to eat and could they fix the heat? Was told the heat is on a motion sensor. Stayed back moved around for a while. Still no heat. I called back and they said someone would come and fix it. Upon my return I assumed it was repaired. Moved around in the room for a while .... no heat kicking on! I was too tired to continue to deal with the problem so bundle up with several layers of clothes an doff to bed! Nice facility but if you can try to avoid staying in Tower III as it seems the facility doesn't have as much interest in maintaining this part of the property or caring for the guest they stick there.
