While Indianapolis, Indiana, may be the 12th largest city in the United States, size isn't what has seized the interest of vacationers and residents. The city is home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the venue for two of the biggest automobile races in sports, and that has earned it the title of "Racing Capital of the World." Still, travelers who've booked cheap vacation packages to Indianapolis will soon find that there's more to Circle City than speed.
After checking into your hotel near downtown Indianapolis, set out to see what the city has to offer. The Motor Speedway is an obvious stop, and even if no one's racing, you can still take a track tour. The striking state capitol has lots of little design flourishes that architecture buffs will love, and fans of history should check out the Indiana War Memorial (a seven-block site), Crown Hill Cemetery (the final resting place of President Benjamin Harrison and John Dillinger), and the American Legion National Headquarters (which is rife with wartime memorabilia). Families with young children ought to visit the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, which is the world's largest museum dedicated to kids with almost one million square feet of floor space. Don't neglect Indy's idiosyncratic side either. Housed in an ex-asylum, the Indiana Medical History Museum exhibits brains preserved in glass jars, and the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library recreates the author's writing space, scathing rejection letters included. Want to wine and dine? Venture beyond the offerings of downtown Indianapolis hotels. Massachusetts Avenue features Irish pubs, German beer halls, and Japanese-themed nightclubs, while the area around Monument Circle provides Italian, Mediterranean, and Brazilian fare.
