Austin is a city that's getting a bit big for its britches, as they say in the South. While the downtown area is walkable, there are tons of things to see beyond Sixth Street and South Congress. Expect some traffic when you leave downtown. Public transportation is an option, but you'll likely want to rent your own set of wheels to explore the city at your own pace.
Austin's ultra-hot summers might restrict your ability to take part in outdoor activities, and this is an outdoorsy place, so you definitely don't want that. Unless hiking or biking in 90 F weather sounds fun to you, visit at another time. Ideally, try to visit in the spring or fall. Daytime temperatures in these seasons are more moderate, generally lingering in the 70s to 80s F.
