    Visiting Texas

Texas comprises seven regions. The Panhandle Plains (Texas' northernmost section) is home to Abilene and Lubbock (home of Texas Tech University), as well as beautiful terrain, vast starry skies, and Western heritage. Big Bend Country is Texas' westernmost region and where the Rio Grande River divides the Texas-Mexico border. Don't miss Big Bend National Park, Marfa (with its eclectic arts scene), and El Paso (minutes from Mexico).

The heart of Texas is Hill Country, home to capital city Austin and the University of Texas' main campus; New Braunfels, popular for Comal River tubing; and the historic German-rooted Fredericksburg. Some of the best Texas resorts are in Hill Country. Farther south are the South Texas Plains, home to the border towns of Laredo and Eagle Pass as well as San Antonio. There, enjoy the Alamo, SeaWorld, and the historic River Walk. The Gulf Coast in the southeast features coastal cities including Galveston, Corpus Christi, and South Padre Island, as well as the state's biggest city: Houston. Many tourists stay in hotels in Houston and rent cars to explore the coast. Texas' largest cities have decent public transportation, but do yourself a favor and rent a car. You'll need it!

The Pineywoods and Prairies and Lakes regions in the northeastern quadrant round out Texas. Lufkin and Longview are cities in the lush, green piney woods, and the major cities of Dallas and Fort Worth are in the Prairies and Lakes region. "Big D" and "The Fort" are home to world-class museums, zoos, and botanic gardens. Check out Dallas' Reunion Tower and the Fort Worth stockyards.

    "The Fairmont Dallas, awesome place!"
The room was large, clean and very quite. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel restaurant "Pyramid Restaurant & Bar" had a regular menu but also had a three course dinner that was excellent and was worth the price. We would stay and eat here again!

"The fanciest Hotel you'll ever stay!"
If you're planning a stay at the Adolphus, make sure you shine your shoes! I made the mistake of booking this hotel in a hurry to book a nice place on the last weekend of the State Fair that was nearby. I used to live in Dallas so, I'm somewhat familiar with the area and usually never stayed downtown for risking a grungy area. As such, the stars really mattered so when I saw a good price with 4+ stars I booked it. The thing is, we were all dressed for the fair which meant my daughter and I were in shorts, athletic shoes, and t-shirts festooned with cotton candy and deep fried twinkie drips. My wife was horrified at our post-Fair appearance when we checked in and made a bee line for the elevators. We kept as low a profile as possible. The staff who saw me were pleasant and seemed to understand what happened. I suspect we weren't the only State Fair attendees there, it's just when you're at the fair, perhaps the fanciest hotel in Dallas wasn't the best choice. However, it's not the Hotel's fault, I sincerely apologize for not being the best dressed. For once we saw our rooms we were blown away by the antique styling and beautiful decor. The bathrooms were amazing complete with adjustable shower nozzles, big mirrors, and tiled floors and shower walls. My room was a bit cold and just turning the AC off kept the room pleasant enough for me. The antique nature of the room means that some things are "rougher" but it's a nice patina as opposed to grunge.

    "Dance Revolution"
We had the opportunity to meet up with my sister-in-law and her grandaughter in Dallas. Her grandaughter was participating in a dance conference with well over 400 attendees. This along with a football game, and a storm that caused flight cancellations. The hotel was booked. Even with the added guests, the hotel and their staff managed flawlessly in my opinion. Room service prompt. (this was a pleasant surprise given the number of guests they had to accomodate that weekend) The buffett was delicious. The workout room well appointed. Conceirge service needs a bit of improvement in the information they give out.

Beautiful property. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Rooms were a nice size and very clean. Restaurant on the property had an amazing breakfast buffet. Truly enjoyed each meal. Bar was quite small for a property that large but a nice place to have a drink.

    "Very nice."
I would not have stayed here had I not gotten a great deal through Travelocity. Very nice, clean, modern room and very pleasant hotel staff. The only negative thing I will mention is the breakfast at Sprig (Hotel restaurant). The food was very good and it was serve yourself buffet style. There was lots of choices and it was very tasty. However there were no prices posted on anything and when I got the bill, it was $20 ! I would definitely stay at DoubleTree again if I could get a similar Travelocity deal, but I would not have breakfast there again.
