The Tawny Owl Cottage is your cozy little escape tucked amongst 2 wooded acres with a glimpse of Shasta Lake through the trees. Magical views of mountain peaks, granite cliffs and Hirz Bay (less than a 10 min drive). Located between 3 beautiful National Parks - Lassen Volcanic, Redwood & Crater Lake. We welcome you to experience cabin life & the wild beauty all around. For those with larger groups, combine with 'Shasta A Frame Cabin', which is ideally located right next door!
Family Room - ping pong, darts, smashball, horseshoes, games, books, corn hole, washer and dryer.
Kitchen - fully equipped with stove, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, Kitchen Aid mixer, toaster, blender, coffee maker, coffee grinder, pots, pans, utensils, dishes. We also have a grill on the deck right off the kitchen.
Bathroom - shower and tub, also includes towels, tissue and soap.
Living Room - sofa, chair, coffee table, wood stove, smart TV and WiFi (rustic-in -the-woods type, but WiFi nonetheless!) Note: we have the best wi-fi we can get for the area. The strength of the signal varies.
*Floor heater note for safety of little ones*: This home was built in 1966 with the ‘central heat’ literally central — it’s located in the hardwood floor next to the sofa in the LR.
Although the cabin was updated before we acquired it, for some reason the heater was left original. It works great — but in the case of Littles, you may want to opt to use our space heaters and fire place for warmth.
We have Littles and it hasn’t been an issue. But something to be aware of.
Dining Area - table and chairs, perfect eating and working space.
Master and Guest Bedrooms - With a queen bed in the master and two full-size beds in the guest room, each bedroom is simply appointed with a dresser and plenty of closet space so that you can settle right in. Leave the blinds open in the Master and there's no better way to start the day than with the sun peeking through the window as it comes up over the mountains. Both bedrooms are set up with crisp cotton linens, along with extra blankets and comfy pillows so you'll have all you need for a restful night's sleep. There is also a Joovy portable crib located in the garage for your convenience. (Instructions for set up on base pad).
Deck - BBQ just off the kitchen, table, umbrella and 6 chairs for dining and lingering, as well as 3 stools at the bar. With a filtered view of the lake through the trees, there's really no better place to write a letter, read a book or just ponder the universe -- especially when the stars are out, which are truly an amazing sight. Or turn on the twinkly lights that wrap around the deck and create your own magical spot to reflect on the beauty of the mountains and the day's adventures.
Please do take care to supervise children on and around the deck area as the terrain is steep.
Parking is available in front of the house (recommend backing in) and extra pull-through parking is adjacent, perfect for parking your boat trailer.
The surrounding area is an outdoor wonderland with 300+ days of sunny day per year, mountains all around, more than 200 miles of hiking and biking trails for all abilities, Mt. Shasta Ski Park (only 50 miles away), countless waterfalls, kayaking, and world-class fishing, everyone can find their paradise here. Located between 3 of some of the most beautiful National Parks (1 hour from Lassen Volcanic National Park, 3 hrs from Redwood National Park and 3 hrs from Crater Lake National Park).
We want you to feel at home in our peaceful forest cottage. The extent of our interaction is up to you, but we and/or our housekeeper will be available as needed to field questions or help out. We'll send you our house manual prior to your arrival so that you can get acquainted and know what to expect.
For your convenience we have provided a video playlist that is jam packed with information and tutorials that will be your go-to for all questions and how-tos around the house. We recommend that you pre-download this playlist to your YouTube app, just in case, for example, the power goes out, you will have a guide to potentially get it back on.

The cottage is nestled amongst the trees on a private gated dirt lane, shared with just three other homes. It is located approximately 10 minutes from the freeway and another 10 minutes from Hirz Bay.
There is no public transportation available to the cottage. So, just download your favorite tunes, hit cruise control and we’ll see you soon!
Managing Expectations:
The Tawny Owl Cottage is designed to be a cozy little haven away from the hustle and bustle of every day life, a place to relax and enjoy nature. The location is beautiful, quiet and somewhat remote. As such, there is limited to no cell service. However, we do miraculously have internet in the middle of the forest!
Because of our remote location, don’t expect supersonic speeds and please note that we are pretty limited with how much data we can use per month. So, that means go easy on streaming those cat videos :) You came to the forest to get away from it all anyway, right?
Also, please keep in mind you will be in the forest, sharing the surrounding space with beautiful wildlife, birds, plants and insects of many kinds.
We love hosting, and we want you to have the best possible experience here.
- The deck is a fun place to hang out, but it’s very high up, so obviously no climbing and children should be supervised to ensure their safety.
- The forest is as fragile as it is breathtaking. Leave it better than you found it :) Be mindful of your footprint, and please do your part to respect and preserve this special place. Don't harm the trees, dump waste, litter, or burn anything.
- We ask that you keep your kitchen waste inside as much as possible. This is because of the local bear population and their messy habit of knocking over garbage cans and dragging bags down the hill.
- As the registered guest, you're required to share all of the above information (and all information in the house manual) with others in your party and take responsibility for any damage(s) they might incur during your stay.
- For security, we have camera mounted to a tree facing the side of the house and the driveway. If you're uncomfortable with this, please get in touch before your booking so that we can make an alternative arrangement.
- If you're new to Airbnb or have fewer than two positive reviews, you'll have to send a request to book our cabin. You can make it easy for us to approve your request by introducing yourself, telling us who you're bringing along and assuring us that you've read these house rules.
