To start, I received zero communication prior to arrival, no instructions for entry, nothing. I messaged the host, who texted "the address and other instructions are in the guide book or manual of some kind". I still know nothing of a manual. I was also informed "The code is typically incorrect in vrbo so make sure you use xxxx."Once inside, I found an unmade bed, no toilet paper, crumpled wet towels on the bathroom counter, a dirty bathroom rug, a full garbage in the kitchen, along with an empty cardboard box from a case of beer.I arrived at check-in time, 3 p.m. I tried contacting the host - sent 5 messages, including pictures of the state of the property. Since he was unresponsive, I phoned VRBO customer service to alert them of the situation.The host eventually responded with "oh no, I'll get someone over there asap". He also then phoned me, and I responded that it was well past check-in time (almost 4 p.m. by now), I'd been driving for 5 hours, and I wanted to find a different place to stay. He became rather confrontational, and tossed out a number of excuses as to the state of the property, as well as why I should not proceed with requesting a refund. I also mentioned that the place smelled, and he said "well, it just hasn't been cleaned yet" - this was not going away with a quick clean.After I let him know I'd like to proceed with a refund, I have heard nothing. VRBO opened a case and I'm awaiting word from them. Next, I'll contact my credit card.
