Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, was first settled in 1719 and steadily grew into a community named after the willow trees that were planted around the town. It later became a popular getaway for residents of nearby Philadelphia during the summer and on holidays. These days, it is mostly residential and serves as a Philly suburb and commuter town. Willow Grove Park was once an amusement park— it closed in 1976 to make way for what is now a shopping mall. It is a nice place to spend a few hours and ride a nostalgic carousel. There are several parks in town, including Roychester Park and Woodlawn Park, where you can stroll when you want to get a little fresh air. The town is quite compact, and most Willow Grove hotels are within walking distance of the mall and the parks. If you prefer driving, look into reserving one of many Willow Grove rental cars to get around. Take a 16-mile drive south to Downtown Philadelphia, where you can see some of the most important historical buildings in the United States. Independence National Historical Park is known as "America's most historic square mile" and is where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed.
