We just loved the historical aspect of the hotel, staff were all amazing and we loved our shuttle driver Micheal who gave us a history of the area and our hotel!! Just fantastic!!

Historic Inn with large, sunny room, comfortable chairs, beds and a HUGE bathroom. It was the perfect place for a stay in the city. The fact that Lady Aster and Edger Allen Poe had also spent significant time in there was a plus!

Be advised of extra charges on your card...

Pros: Quirky, charming. Hotel staff was friendly and made efforts to be helpful
Cons: A "hold for incidentals" needs to be clearly defined and explained
Location: The hotel was easy to find. We ate at Urban Farmhouse, the restaurant within the hotel. It was a decent breakfast.
Arrived at hotel on Friday night about 11:00 pm. Found free off street parking on the same block as the hotel. Check-in was simple, fast. During check-in, I was asked for a card to "hold for incidentals." Had booked our room and paid in full through Travelocity prior to arriving, so I gave them my debit card. We were given a conveniently located room and it was clean. We had a decent night's rest (could hear footsteps in the room above us pretty clearly at various points during the night,) and were awoken by loud conversation outside our room about 7:00 am. Shower was nice, water was hot. Go to check out and don't seem to have any issues. We leave and continue our trip. Stop at the outlets to go shop, my card gets declined because the "hold for incidentals" on my debit card was an additional charge for almost 150% of the rate we actually paid for the room, and it was listed as a pending charge so the funds were not available to me. This was enormously inconvenient, as I had budgeted carefully for the trip and had not planned on having to use a credit card. I called and the hotel rep wasn't sure why the amount charged was so high (in the booking details the hotel lists a significantly lower deposit amount.) She said she'd take the pending charge off, but it's now Monday, and the funds are still unavailable in my checking account. Called again just now - rep said it could take 5-10 business days but "it might be off in 3 days." This is ridiculous.

Friendly and Charming

Pros: See above.
Cons: A second light next to the bed would help, as there was only one.
Location: Two excellent restaurants include Perly's and Rappahannock. First has amazing smoked salmon and bluefish. The second has superb seafood.
Everyone at the hotel was always friendly, charming and very helpful. It clearly has been renovated from an older design, and has kept much of the original charm. For example, the mattresses were "higher" than normal, as they are in New Orleans, but very comfortable. The bathroom has the mantel from the original fireplace (no longer working of course) which is perfect for placing your toiletries. The location is just around the corner from several excellent restaurants, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Not your usual

Pros: It was historically quaint
Cons: Carpeting in my room had seen better days
This is a quaint and historic place to stay near really cool places to eat and things to do. Hotel staff are very nice! Will stay there again for sure!

Room 228

Pros: see above
Cons: see above
Location: see above
Overall the hotel 'lived up to expectations'... It is quaint, cute, well-appointed. Nice place to rest/relax; good breakfast in the a.m. -- which we weren't expecting! Our room overlooked the 'garden'; very pleasant, quiet place to sit and enjoy a nice cup of tea. The room/bed was comfortable, although the unit on the roof (my guess = heating compressor for the 6-8 room building) which ran almost all night (as it got quite chilly) created an unbearable mechanical 'hum' which reverberated throughout the room/floor/furniture/etc... We WILL go back and stay again! The location/shuttle to downtown locations and other aspects just beat out the 'big box' guys... JH in Stafford, VA

Feels historic, big rooms, poorly trained staff..

Pros: It has that "Ye Olde Inn" feel most people want when visiting Virginia...
Cons: See above
Location: Downtown, lots to do, and they offer a free shuttle which is nice.
I was pretty much disappointed in my experience here. The room was very large and quirky (a bricked over fireplace in the bathroom), but that's what you want when you get something historic in Virginia. My complaints were over staff and systems. More often than not, there was no one at the front desk (I had to wait 20 minutes just to find someone to let me check out - there's a real, old fashioned key you need to return!). Two other times I had to hunt around for staff. Their systems are a disaster - not able to give me a receipt on checkout, made me call twice in the next week to chase one down and STILL couldn't give me one in a normal format that my accounting department would accept for reimbursement. Should have paid more to stay at a better run establishment.
