"Depends what you're looking for ...."
I knew, kind of, what to expect from this hotel style. The price can not be beat inside NYC area, but you almost always get what you pay for. The entrance is hard to find if you are not looking for it and only a single set of glass doors to a long unmarked stairway. The "lobby" is on the second floor. If the hotel is busy, don't plan on being able to check in early or even on time. They are not well staffed, and loads of "tagged" luggage stand in the lobby, even after 3 p.m. which is when I arrived. So, if you have any bags that you really DON'T want to leave hanging out in the lobby, best to find an alternative solution until you can get to your room. If you have a "single" room, the rooms are literally, little larger than the twin bed inside. Thus, all your luggage and other things will be on one side of the bed while you sleep on the other side. Still not bad, given the price. The rooms next to yours are very close with not too much noise reduction between them. That being said, I had a VERY quiet night, even with the noise from outside the hotel. Nice change from my other NYC stays. The sheets were not the whitest, but also had some long black hairs here and there. My biggest complaint here. They did smell clean though. As far as the shared bathrooms ... they are VERY difficult to get into in the morning. Plan accordingly. So, if you are just crashing at night, then this is a good cost alternative. If you are skiddish, then you might want to look elsewhere.

"Everyone should do at least one nite there........"
It could actually be a game changer, in that all the people in the area are great. The hotel brings to mind the late 1800s, or maybe depression era NY. no elevator, what looks like 2 to 3 stories of stairs straight up, don't bring a lot of luggage. Flip-flops would also be recommended for the shower. The incredible laundry at 179 Hester can take care of the sheets, pillow cases, and all the gets kind of hot in the rooms, probably would be more pleasant in the dead of winter.
