How to get through airport security fast when traveling to New York
If you like the idea of spending more time at the airport bars and restaurants and less time navigating your way through security on your way to New York, follow these handy tips:

  • Airport security staff will expect to see your passport and boarding pass as part of their checks. Tuck them away in a convenient place, ready for inspection.
  • Take off your shoes, belt and jewellery before arriving at the security checkpoint. Items like these are not allowed to pass through the body scanner.
  • Digital cameras, laptops and other electronic devices must be placed in separate tubs to be X-rayed.
  • Toothpaste, lip balm and other toiletry items in liquid, gel or cream form need to be stored in containers smaller than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). They must also fit in a 1-quart (1-liter) clear zip-lock plastic bag.
  • The airport security may instruct you to take off your shoes prior to entering the body scanner. Choose a pair that slip off easily. There’s nothing more annoying than having to do up your laces again and again.
  • Razors and knives are not allowed on board the aircraft. Tuck them away in your checked luggage to avoid leaving them at the airport security checkpoint.

How to find cheap flights

What is the best day to buy a plane ticket?

Airfares offered on Friday tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity.ca in 2021. Purchasing your airfares on a Thursday or Saturday can also provide better value, however our advice if you’re looking to save money is to avoid booking on a Wednesday or Sunday. Our data shows that those two days have the highest ticket values on average, so keep this in mind if you’re browsing flight deals.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travellers may already know this, earlier in the week is often the cheapest time to fly. Flights departing on a Monday are the cheapest of the week. Since flights towards the middle of the week tend to be more popular, this causes the prices to rise. This is why, on average, airfares booked on Travelocity.ca in 2021 were most expensive for Wednesday departures.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Here’s the deal: It is typically possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity.ca up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 2-4 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.ca from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change and may vary depending on selections made.

Flights To New York

As author Thomas Wolfe once observed, “One belongs to New York instantly. One belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years." From the moment you step off the plane in NYC, the city absorbs you into its frenetic energy and cacophony of noise. An urban melody of honking horns, talking crosswalks, and distant sirens fills your ears. Welcome to the City that Never Sleeps.

It’s not just the promise of an exciting concrete jungle that draws people to NYC like a magnet. The food, art, and theater are known around the world and bring in everyone from epicurean experts to gallery gurus. Choose from one of our New York City flights today, and soon you’ll be rubbing elbows with travelers from around the world and bold New Yorkers alike.

Transportation from New York Airports

Booking flights to New York City is easy; Travelocity has options from many major cities. When your plane touches the tarmac, you’re just minutes from a New York slice of pizza and some of the top hotels on the East Coast. NYC is well-serviced by a robust public transportation system, so you can get from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to your favorite borough via subway or commuter rail. You can also hop into a cab and head straight for your destination.

Having a rental car is not only unnecessary, but it might actually be a burden in particularly congested places like Manhattan. If you plan on staying on the island of Manhattan for most of your stay, become acquainted with the subway. If you plan to explore the outer boroughs or venture on to upstate New York, book a rental car at the same time you buy plane tickets to New York City and save some cash.
