1st time in DC - family trip. Chose The River Inn for room size, kitchen, Metro nearby, good reviews. * Booked "1 bdrm dbl suite" (fam of 5 & grandparent). * Very courteous desk staff & porter. Luggage taken up to room. * 1st impression of room: Thank God it's large enough, but, what is this old decor? Not new "Retro Style Decor" just OLD drab decor. Everything gold, wallpaper, carpet. Gold & orange curtains w/rod coming off wall @$250+/night? * Large flat screen TV on large cabinet. Huge desk. Look newer. * Bedroom decor - same gold decor xcept white bedding. Very comfortable beds. TV. Newer dresser, large drawers. Large dbl closet. * Bright bathroom as pictured on website. No exhaust fan. Heavy metal window in shower almost took fingers off on 2 diff people when it fell down suddenly while trying to open it. Windowsill gets wet, been poorly repaired w/wood putty. Narrow tiny tub. Metal soap dish hilariously placed to hit your hip & rear at every turn. * Couch - older, worn, flat cushions, uncomfortable. Unbearable sleeper sofa mattress. * Old kitchen - old 2 burner countertop stove. Microwave, Keurig, & toaster all plugged in w/ext cord in cabinet! Stuck drawer, handle came off. * Website totes: "Coffee service includes: fresh beans, grinder & machine in-room" What? No. * "Separate Dressing Rooms w/ Granite Vanities" - the poorly lit small granite counter next to bathroom door w/no plug? * "Upscale, spacious suites". Spacious? Yes. Upscale? No! * Stay there again? No.

Just a quick trip

Pros: The room, staff, and location.
Cons: To me, it's very minor, but the carpet just inside the room may need a cleaning or replacement.
Location: Perfect location if you're going to the Kennedy Center and very near a Metro stop.
My daughters and I needed a place to stay that was near the Kennedy Center and reasonably priced. The River Inn was perfect for us. It's near the Foggy Bottom Metro stop and is a very short walk to the Kennedy Center. We felt very safe in the area. We even walked from the Lincoln Memorial to the Inn. Our room was bigger than expected with a queen bed, pull-out sofa and even a kitchenette. It was all very clean. The desk staff were friendly and very helpful and the housekeeping staff always greeted us. The parking valet was very polite and friendly, too. We had breakfast one morning and it was more than I could eat. We ordered off the menu but you can also get the continental buffet. Our servers were very nice. The next time I go to DC, I will definitely stay here again!

Ok hotel, good location re transportation.

Pros: location and clean
In the midst of George Washington University. It was pleasant to walk around the historic district. The hotel was located close to the Kennedy Center, the Watergate Hotel and easy to get to downtown Washington and the National Mall. The main problem with the hotel was the lack of a common area and a poor restaurant.

Quaint & convenient with excellent service!

We enjoyed our stay at the spacious and very clean River Inn. Rooms were immaculate, if aging, and the service and location were outstanding.

Stay Anywhere Else But River Inn

Pros: N/A
Cons: Level of professionalism from all staff. Bedding Decor and facilities
I was booked for a four night stay in July 2015 with my husband and child. We checked in very late and the Night Manager was appallingly unprofessional, rude and sexist. The reservation was booked in my name but he refused to communicate with me telling me instead that he was speaking to my husband not to me! Anytime I attempted to talk to him about my reservation and checking in, his rude, misogynistic, condescending response was "Oh woman!" If it wasn't past midnight I would have left then and found other accommodation; however, we had just driven more than four hours to Washington DC with our young child and were tired. I made reservations immediately for another hotel (the amazing Omni Shoreham) and checked out the next day. I reported the Night Manager to the General Manager the next day, and he and his day staff were very apologetic and sympathetic in their handling of the matter. However, the damage was done and I refused to stay. Additionally, the premises are very run down. There was peeling paint on the walls and ceilings. Old, rusty stove hubs and broken cabinets. The bed was terribly uncomfortable also (I think it was a thin, coil mattress - horrible)! The GM agreed to refund me for the night I stayed at the hotel, as a good will gesture for the very poor experience we had. Three months later, I am still chasing after the refund!

Hotel short cab ride from memorials

Pros: The staff was very friendly and the junior suites were very spacious.
Cons: Their heating system should be updated. They can only run either the a/c or the heat.
Location: Short cab ride to Lincoln Memorial, a good starting point to view the Washington Mall area.
My sister & I brought our Dad, a Korean War Veteran, to DC to see the Korean War Memorial. We stayed at the River Inn which was a beautiful, friendly hotel. My sister and I were very comfortable. My Dad, being over 80, liked his suite, but was very cold. The Inn is old and can only run either the a/c or the heat. The heat hadn't been turned on yet in mid-October and DC experienced colder than normal temps the few days before we arrived. The staff was helpful and supplied an electric heater for my Dad which kept the bedroom comfortably warm. The hotel's restaurant, Dish, was very convenient and the food was delicious. Breakfast portions were just right and reasonably priced for the city. The Inn also offers a checklist of snacks that they will pick-up from a nearby market and store in your kitchen. We actually took the walk to the market ourselves and picked up what we wanted, but a great idea if you're too busy to go yourself. We all also felt very safe walking in the inn's neighborhood at night.

Grand stay in a modest hotel.

I spent a weekend with daughter who was moderating a panel at the Kennedy Center. This was a comfortable spot close to the action.
