A great hotel, but staff is pushing too hard to sell you timeshare. I thought I booked a hotel room. No place to park and check in but only valet parking.

The hotel has a great history and you can’t beat the location. We did not do the timeshare presentation, not sure what it’s like. They staff was great and they offered discounts to local restaurants and activities/museums. 2 great restaurants with in walking distance. Jimmy Carter’s mexican(hotel will give you a 10%off) and Hash Hash Agogo. The kitchen is very well stocked. 2 grocery stores within 1.5 miles. I downloaded the Entertainment coupon book, Groupon and living social for San Diego. I got a discount on everything activity/tour/museum we went to. The iride scooter tour was sun too.

I was blindsided with being told I had to sit through a 20 minute video and 90 minute presentation. Inn at the Park is like a timeshare set-up. There wasn't anything in the information through Travelocity (shame on you) that let me know. Had I known I would have selected a different hotel. I did not appreciate the pressure sales tactics.

Close to Balboa park but few amenities

Pluses: Great location close to Balboa Park and the zoo; Spacious room with art deco interior; Minuses: Fridge smelled like beef grease; fire alarm battery dead (and beeping) when I walked in; main elevator out of service whole time (had to use service elevator). No in house amenities such as breakfast, an attached restaurant, or coffee/social in lobby. All-in-all, a nice place but a little out of repair and impersonal with few amenities.

They are currently under construction until fall 2012, but this did not impact our stay.

Classy older hotel that has an excellent location. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Large rooms with kitchens. The breakfast on the rooftop had glorious views and the food was excellent. It will be a top notch hotel once the renovation is complete in fall 2012. I recommend it even during construction.

Cute hotel in a great area

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, right next to a beautiful park
Cons: no a/c
It's an old hotel that's being remodeled slowly, but the service makes up for it. Now, if you can't live without A/C, Do NOT come here. I didn't know but the weather in San Diego is so beautiful I just opened the windows and the fan was enough. The location was great, right next to the park and great little places to see and eat. For the price I think it was great

Cons: old in a bad way, no air conditioning, old musky smell
Okay I don't want to sound picky but this was an awful experience. I had to go to San Diego very last minute so I looked up hotels on a travel site and this one came up as one with one of the highest customer ratings. The pictures looked really nice. I even read some of the customer reviews and read mostly good things and thought that any negatives were probably just pessimistic people whom nothing was good enough for. Boy was I wrong. Everything that I read about this place that was NEGATIVE was TRUE. Not only true but kind of an understatement. When they say the parking lot is too small IT IS. We arrived after midnight and were so lucky to have found the only spot left to park. I had a infant with me and was not going to walk a few blocks in the middle of the night with all kinds of strange sounds going on around us, if we didn't find that parking spot I don't know what we would have done. The lobby is so old but has that antique feel so I didn't panic but thought wow really not my style. I was a little concerned when we got in the elevator because again Really old. Then when we got to the hallway I thought "The reviews said it didn't smell old" well it smelled old and musky to me. When we opened the door my heart sank. It looked nothing like the pictures, well I take that back, the pictures basically showed only the bed and the bed sheets did look the same which in my opinion was the ONLY thing that was updated in that hotel. Everything around the bed was scary. The pictures were old and scary, the people in them looked angry probably from having to look at that nasty hotel all day lol. But seriously I tried not to look at them and didn't let my baby look at them either because I didn't want her to get scared. The TV was like 15 years old. The furniture was old enough for me to not want to sit on them. The floor creaked with every step and shook the room. There were pipes going from the ceiling down through the floor, why they couldn't put the pipes in the wall I don't know. The chairs in the "kitchen" didn't match and were really old. The kitchen was a very very small enclosed space with old cabinets and by old I don't mean antiquey I mean maybe from the 70's or 80's with the corners chipping off. Stove was from like i don't know the 60's but was not a good thing as I will explain later. I know this is very long and detailed but I seriously wish I would have read more detailed reviews and actually believed them. So this is for the people who don't want to waste their time and money. I also read in reviews that the bathrooms needed updating, but when I had called the hotel they said the hotel and been recently renovated, so I thought that would have taken care of that problem...NOT. The bathrooms were so old! The tiles in the shower were pink, the sink was just that, a sink with no counter space and in the first room we were assigned the toilet was the strangest thing, it had all the pipes coming out of the wall next to you twisting and turning and then there was a metal stick like handle like the ones in a public restroom sticking out of one of the pipes to flush it. I almost cried when I saw it because it was a confirmation that yes this hotel was really that bad. The windows were all open and with the sounds from outside we wanted to lock them for sure but one didn't lock, it barely closed. Again very old. So we called the front desk and asked to switch rooms because we wanted to feel safe with our baby and with an open window I knew I wouldn't sleep well. So we were brought new keys to a new room. As soon as we entered the second room the smell of gas hit me. My husband went to the stove to make sure it was off. It was off but there was gas leaking from behind the stove. This was the last straw. We were leaving. Even if we could not get a refund we were still leaving and for my husband to agree to that is really saying something. He later told me he was putting on a brave face for me and that he was really just as scared as I was lol I have to say the nicest thing about this hotel was the guy behind the front desk. He was so nice and understanding, he even wanted to help us and make sure we had a map and were able to find another place to stay because it was by this time almost 2 am. He was very helpful and he did not charge us for the room. If you have stayed at this hotel before and don't agree with what I have written maybe that's in part because the rooms have some quality differences. For instance the second room we were assigned to had matching chairs at the table and a normal toilet. Although the toilet paper roll did go flying behind the toilet when I tried to use it lol It just became comical at some point. But honestly both rooms we tried to stay in looked NOTHING like the pictures, I almost think they updated a couple rooms and took pictures of those. So we eventually found a Courtyard Marriott and decided from now on stick with what we know and ALWAYS read reviews especially the detailed negative ones.

The hotel was in a great location.

The hotel was located right next to Balboa Park and was within walking distance. It was the perfect distance from the airport and all of the different attractions that we wanted to see. It was only a short car ride to anything we wanted to do. The room was very nice. We didn't plan on staying much in the room because we wanted to see so many things. It was perfect for what we wanted and the Kitchenette was an added bonus. The only complaint we had was that the shower head felt like you were getting shot with a bunch of bullets. Also, there isn't enough parking in their small lot for everyone on the weekends but there is street parking very close to the hotel. Hotel Staff was very friendly in assisting us with all of our questions and needs. We also loved that breakfast is served everyday! Overall we had a great stay and I would recommend this hotel to anyone that doesn't mind staying at a historical hotel or one of the typical chain hotels.

Comfortable, gracious, but without being stuffy

Great experience from start to finish. The hotel staff was friendly and gracious, and the room was large enough that three of us could share and we never felt cramped. The Friday night rooftop happy hour started out a bit slowly, but finally picked up after 8 with a fun crowd and gorgeous views. The views were even better the next morning with a nice complimentary breakfast on the roof. The hotel is an easy 10 minute walk to Hillcrest, and right next to Balboa Park. It had just the right combination of elegance, fun, relaxed comfort, and historic charm to make it the perfect change of pace from boring, stuffy, chain hotels.
