This modern 2BD ground floor apartment is tucked away below this Portland classic. It's a garden sanctuary full of natural light and no stairs required. The apartment was built 2016, maximizing charm with modern flow and amenities. Walk score of 93(!): coffee shops, tea cafes, restaurants galore, unique local shops, grocery market, transit access, Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge, river beach, Oak amusement park and indoor roller rink and 3 city parks with playgrounds. So much to LOVE about Sellwood!
The Sellwood neighborhood of Portland has a friendly village feel with city amenities. It is home to many local coffee and tea shops, restaurants and food carts, unique shops, grocery market, Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge, river beach, Oaks Amusement Park and indoor roller rink and 3 city parks with playgrounds.
The apartment: It's an ~800 sq ft apartment and it comes with a good story. We lifted the original house to build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) underneath and scooted the whole house over 5 ft so that the ADU would have its own patio with outdoor seating. It was a quite a spectacle! The result is a 2 bedroom apartment with a spacious living space and a full size kitchen. This well-designed layout optimizes function and beauty. It is furnished to be charming and comfortable.
Bathroom: There are 2 half baths with a total of 1 toilet. The summary near the title of the listing shows 2 bathrooms, which is misleading. We LOVE our bathroom combo, but we do not call it 2 bathrooms. Here's how we describe it. Our bathroom combo includes two separate rooms: (1) one half bath with a toilet and mini vanity and (2) another half bath with a shower with full vanity sink. Even though there is only one toilet, it is so helpful that it is in a separate room from the shower and vanity. It provides extra privacy and convenience and minimizes wait times. We love this feature!
The kitchen: Fully equipped kitchen. Dishwasher, full size oven and is fully-appointed with cookware, utensils, food processor, baking sheets, etc. We provide a drip coffee maker, a French press, a pour-over and a grinder. We provide coffee beans for your first cup, in case you arrive late at night. (We don't want you to have to leave the house before your first coffee.) We provide a few basic seasonings. If you have a favorite, let us know before your arrival, we're happy to add a spice!
Workspace: Digital nomads welcome! We have fast Wi-Fi. It ranges from 250-450 Mbps, which allows 4k streaming and video calls on multiple devices. Most people are drawn to set up at the dining table or the kitchen peninsula, but both bedrooms also have minimalist desks/workstations for more private work sessions.
TV: There is a ROKU tv with Netflix provided. You can log into other services with your accounts if you choose.
Bedrooms: Both bedrooms have super comfortable queen beds to contribute to a great night's sleep. Both bedrooms have closets. We supply linens and towels, of course.
We provide a floor mat suitable for a child. Since the floor is concrete, adults don't tend to be comfortable on a mat.
There is a full-size washer and dryer - we provide unscented detergent. Locally made lightly scented soaps and unscented shampoo/conditioner.
Follow the garden path to the left of our front stairs. It will lead to your patio and entrance. No stairs during this stay! We have a keyless lock, for which I will send you a private code for your stay - no keys to manage during your visit!
Guests have a private entrance and a patio for your sole enjoyment. We live in the upper house but because of the location of the private guest entrance and patio, we rarely cross paths with our guests. We enjoy the rare occasions when we do though! Maybe we'll be working in the yard when you walk by!
Lastly, a little more about Sellwood...
Need coffee? There are many local coffee shops within walking distance. Tea, instead? The famous Portal Tea is 2 blocks away. There are also bubble tea, juice, ice cream and frozen yogurt shops.
Hungry? Within easy walking distance, there are 2 cart pods with various cuisines represented, and MANY restaurants along SE 13th.
Eating in? Our New Seasons Market is 4 blocks away. They have everything for cooking a full meal and also have hot nourishing prepared foods. And Grand Central Bakery has some of the best sandwiches around.
Shopping? Sellwood is still famous for its antique shops. Now there are many other shops, including toys, clothing, gift, spice and rugged handmade backpacks. There's an inviting shop dedicated to board games (Cloud Cap Games) with lots of games available to play in their on site game room.
Nature is at your doorstep. We are minutes away from city parks, a wildlife refuge, and even a river beach.
Other things to note
The apartment is a ground level daylight basement, or as they say in Chicago: a garden apartment. We live in the upper house. We are a family of 4 with a dog. We invested heavily in soundproofing but it is an older home and we did not achieve complete sound isolation. You will hear the dog romping occasionally and humans moving through the living space, you will NOT hear conversations or even voices. We've been hosting this apartment since we built it in 2016 and the pattern is that most people love our place. Don't take my word, read our reviews. Many have even described it as quiet, but at least one guest made it clear that she was really annoyed by the sounds of our life. I strive to provide accurate information so that if you are someone who is seeking silence or is sound sensitive, you can recognize the mismatch in advance. You deserve to be delighted with your stay in Portland!!!
We have an Accessory Short Term Rental permit which is required by the City of Portland: 17-265887-000-00-HO.
