Wyndham San Diego Bayside

1355 N Harbor Drive, San Diego - Map
This hotel is right on the harbor and walking distance from the Star of India and the Midway. It was less money than other downtown hotels. The restaurant is apparently being redone, so the only place to eat in the hotel was a cafe. They did have room service, which we did not use. We did get dessert at the cafe and enjoyed it. The room was clean and comfortable. Our keys turned off before we checked out, so when we got back after walking to a nearby restaurant for breakfast, we could not get into our room. There was a hotel staff member nearby who was very helpful. she did not want to just let us into the room (good for security) so she tried calling the front desk to get confirmation. It took a long time before we were let into the room. We we checked out a little while later, we let the front desk know. It was actually a pretty big inconvenience, if we had had a plane to catch, the amount of time it took to get back in the room could have been disastrous. It would have been nice if the front desk offered some compensation. I mentioned that, and he apologized again, but did not offer anything.

The Sofia is extremely charming and welcoming. The staff is accommodating, the facilities are very comfortable, and the location is close to the harbor and to Gaslamp. Be sure to snag a corner room, city facing....the extra windows make the small room feel more open.

"Nice low-key hotel in the Gaslamp District"
We had a great stay at Hotel Z. It is a smaller, quieter hotel than many of the large high-rise hotels in the area. Therefore the service is very personalized and efficient. Despite it's "boutique" size, the amenities are wonderful. Everything you need including great products, robes, slippers, thick towels, wonderful bedding, and daily pineapple cupcakes! The staff is wonderful. Very helpful in advising on area attractions and good places to go. The location is awesome, right in the heart of the Gaslamp District and very convenient to the convention center. Tons of great restaurants in the area. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to my friends.

"Great hotel next to the water"
This stay was a birthday gift for my son and his wife. I stayed in the suite also. Staff was amazing. Especially at check in. They upgraded us a bay view room and on floor 11. What a view. Room was clean and they checked us in at 2 instead of 4! Everyone that works there was so friendly, except the older lady that cleaned up the breakfast trays. She walked by us more then a dozen times during breakfast. A bit unsettling as I felt when my son went back for more food, she didn't approve. Uncomfortable. Otherwise this hotel is wonderful. Our room had a few things that I would fix, like the bar sink faucet didn't work, no big deal, but why have one. And the entire faucet set on the extra sink in hall pulled out completely from the sink. The whole thing! The bathroom door opens out, so if someone is inside and comes out when you are passing, they hit you with the door. But the great outweighs the few flaws. I would definitely stay here again. Along with recommending this to my friends.
