Kamaka Cottage at Volcano- A Rainforest Hideaway

Nestled in the quaint rainforest town of Volcano, this charming cottage rental sits on three acres of Ohia forest and is just 2.5 miles from the entrance of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. It features a retro-modern design, a newly renovated interior, and an open floor plan.

The Kamaka Cottage is a cozy studio that combines the kitchen, dining, and living areas into one open floor plan—your perfect home base for exploring Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and the Kalapana Coast of the Big Island.

Ideal for up to two guests, the cottage includes a queen-size bed and a well-equipped kitchenette with a mini fridge, toaster oven, microwave, griddle, two-burner hot plate, pots and pans, a Keurig/drip coffee maker, and a fresh water dispenser. Complimentary wireless internet and parking just outside your front door are included.

Once you enter the private gate, an easy-access driveway leads you straight to the cottage and the main front door. Convenient, free parking is available right next to the cottage. Self check-in is available, or the host can meet you upon request.

The cottage is located behind the main house. Our hosts live on site and will respect your privacy while you enjoy the space, but they’re available to assist if needed. A host will also be on-site during your stay to assist with check-in/check-out if needed and address any issues that require immediate attention.

Kamaka Cottage is one of the most inviting Big Island vacation rentals, located in Volcano Village—adjacent to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The town offers a farmers market and a cozy store where you can shop, grab a bite, and warm up with coffee or hot chocolate on the porch while watching the mist.

We’re located just 35 minutes from the larger town of Hilo, which offers grocery stores and additional shopping options. We’re also 30 minutes from Papakōlea Beach—one of only four green sand beaches in the world and a favorite resting spot for sea turtles.

At an elevation of about 3,720 feet (1,134 meters), the cottage can get cool during the winter months—sometimes below 45ºF (7.2ºC). Guests are welcome to use the provided infrared heater, and we recommend packing warm jackets in addition to bathing suits for winter visits.

Volcano Village residents take pride in preserving the night sky, so exterior lighting is kept low. As a result, the only streetlights in the village are located along the highway where Wright Road and Haunani Road begin and head up through town. Roads can be quite dark at night.

The State of Hawai‘i imposes two taxes on visitors: the Transient Accommodations Tax and the General Excise Tax. In 2020, the total tax collected by the host for lodging stays is 14.96%.

Loved!

I loved staying in this little cottage! The main house is close by but that didn’t detract from the peacefulness. It’s decorated super cutely, the bed was comfy and has everything you need for a stay close to the national park. Opening the big doors next to the bed makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the rainforest - surrounded by vegetation with birds chirping.

Quaint Rainforest Getaway

We really enjoyed our short stay at Kamaka Cottage in Volcano. The location was perfect for exploring Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is nicely appointed with a lot of sunny windows and great access to the outdoors via the barn doors that open into the rain forest. It has everything you need for a private and secluded stay.

Great for visiting Volcano National Park

The property was clean and cute and a great location for visiting Volcano National Park. It is fairly well appointed, but it does not have a TV. Be advised that it is not secluded and is immediately adjacent to another, larger rental house and that parking is out the front door. Another thing to be mindful is that the unit must be heated/cooled by you. There is no thermostat, and temperatures fluctuate from 80 to 50, meaning you have to open windows/fans or turn on a space heater. Our first night we got very cold as we didn’t realize that there was no insulation and it would get so cold inside the cabin. Although the owner did warn us of packing properly for the weather changes, there are no instructions inside for heating/cooling the unit. This would have been helpful and this why I’m giving 4 stars. The second night was warmer as we figured out using the space heater and the other renters were much quieter. In addition we had the good fortune of seeing Kilauea erupt!

Exactly as advertised

This property was exactly as advertised and exactly what we expected and needed. It was clean, well stocked, and close to the Volcano National park. The hosts were excellent communicators, reaching out to ensure we knew about weather alerts during our stay and letting us know they were available if any questions or issues arose (none did). Wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

Great value

This location is about as luxurious as economy gets. It is simple, but exceptionally comfortable, clean and well equipped. Yet it was so much less expensive than almost anywhere else. It was a score.
