We traveled to San Francisco with our family. We did not rent a car and we were glad that we didn't. We spent 4 wonderful days enjoying great food and interesting sights. Bring along comfortable shoes and a jacket, you will need them. Be sure to book your Alcatraz tours in advance, they sell out weeks ahead. We enjoyed touring the ships at Hyde Pier, just across the street from our hotel.

"Stately Grand Old Hotel"
We arrived on January 1st and the grand lobby was still decorated for Christmas. It was beautiful. The Room had been redone since my last visit and was very nicely updated. The service staff was splendid. No shortcomings were encountered at all.

"Palace Hotel - San Francisco Union District"
The location was absolutely perfect. My wife was running in the Nike 1/2 Marathon and it was right at or near the starting location. The hotel is also within walking distance of the Westfield Mall and Century Theaters. The location is surrounded by shops and restaurants. My wife and I flew in from Palm Springs to San Francisco International Airport. The only thing I would do different was don't recommend renting a vehicle because the Bart and Ground Metro system is right next to the Hotel on Market and 3rd or Post Street. It cost $55 dollar a night to park the car via the valet. We never moved the vehicle once we arrived from the airport. Great stay great hotel...remember bit expensive numerous taxes but it's San Francisco.

"Great location, but ..."
I've stayed at the Hotel Whitcomb three times now. Great location. Cool historic hotel. Okay with the general lack of services, since there's so much to do and see in San Francisco. However, the property is getting dated ... and not in a good way. Peeling wall paper in the room. Glass shelves in the bathroom barely hanging onto the wall over the sink. And a few other odds and ends. While the room itself was clean (though fairly dusty,) the hallway had not been vacuumed in the three full days I was there. I'm willing to bet the link and cookie crumbs (or whatever it was) is still sitting on the dark part of the carpet in the middle of the hallway. While there were cleaning staff for the rooms, I didn't see one person cleaning elevators, front door glass, hallways, or anything in the lobby during my entire stay.

"Historic but not luxury"
Visited during hot spell in San Francisco. Room uncomfortably hot despite ceiling fan and additional fan. There was no AC. Wi-fi required installation of a hot spot in order to work, with re-sign on required each time device turned on. Room was musty smelling. We stayed in Historic King with no view.

"Delightful"
The staff here is great! I'd had problems at a different hotel, so moved to the Westin, last minute. They bent over backwards to get my reservation in and make me comfortable while the quickly got my room prepared, even though it was way earlier than normal check in time. The room was comfortable and clean, and I always love the heavenly bed.

"great SF location. hotel has a good restaurant."
this hotel is in a historic building across from Union Square. The restaurant is traditional SF style with good food well served. We were disappointed in our rooms. Ours was small, uncomfortable and poorly arranged. Our friend's room was a connected room that faced the street and was quite noisy.

"It was a great hotel but....."
The hotel itself is pretty good, nice rooms/bathrooms, Heather was especially nice, but that's where it ends for us. If you want to do ANYTHING other than shop, don't stay here. While the hotel itself is great, the area is just plain disturbing complete with every possible noise out the window from sirens to homeless people screaming in the night to daily dumpster unloading noises. No sleeping through the night here, period. There is absolutely no possibility that you will find any relaxation of any kind here. If you walk down the street, you will always be looking over your shoulder to see who's right behind you and what they're doing? Riddled with homeless people everywhere, perpetually asking you for money(and argumentative when you don't produce). After staying here, my image of SF has literally been shattered. I won't be going back for anything leisure ever again. Wow, what happened to San Francisco?

"Very unique hotel"
This is a great hotel if you are looking for some charm. The rooms are tiny but quaint. No TVs but plenty of books and artwork to check out. I liked the availability of coffee, hot chocolate, and tea all day long. My only tiny complaint is the amount of noise you can hear from your room. The walls are very thin so you hear everything, including the kitchen in the restaurant below. I thought this would keep me up all night, especially because we stayed on New Year's Eve, but it was actually pretty quiet once midnight struck.
