Felt like we were guests in an old southern mansion and I guess truth be told, that's the effect the Carolina Inn wished to achieve.

Comfort and luxury

Pros: Beautiful, clean, quiet and the free cookies were awesome! Location is unbeatable for touring UNC.
Cons: Did not stay long enough to find a problem. Not even sure if there was a pool.
Location: Very short walk to the best restaurant TOP of the Hill on Franklin; close to stadium.
Premium double was plenty of space for two teens and parents. Nice sitting area and a large bathroom able to have to females with all the beauty supplies getting ready at the same time without issue. Could add a rollaway to bathroom it was so large. Perfect location for touring the college. Easy walk to Top of the Hill/Franklin street. Short drive to Alumni Center. Hoping my daughter gets into UNC so my husband and I can come back to stay without kids!

Old fashioned, staid accommodations, staff rude

Pros: Our expectations were much higher than the hotel merited. It seemed like it might be our 'go to' location. NOT.
Cons: Staff attitude needs big adjustment. Staff require training in basic courtesy, how to behave with respect for guests. VERY unsettling staff.
Location: The hotel was close to our venue of travel, leading us to stay here. VERY disappointing, however, as staff was just plain RUDE, room was small, tight.
When we arrived we were greeted by a man responsible for car parking. He totally ignored me, would not even look at me, even though the reservation was in MY name, and talked only to my husband. When I asked him about this, he laughed at me and sneered. NOT exaggerating. His attitude was incredibly insulting at a personal level. Finding the check in desk was a little challenging when entering the building. It is on the right, tucked a bit back. A young girl behind the desk was unbelievably flippant and her presumption of familiarity was disrespectful. I am NOT her mommy or her girlfriend - I am a guest, paying $250 a night for a relatively uncomfortable room. The room was old, very tight on space, and had some updates, like particle board RTA armoire furniture which filled the room with the heavy smell of formaldehyde. A desk was squeezed next to the armoire, too tight, could not sit and work at the desk without bumping the armoire. Only one sitting chair in the room, not appropriate for 2 adult guests. One of us had to sit on the bed to watch TV. TV has not HD, as virtually all other hotels where we stay on our travels. For this price, we expected top shelf, and it was DEFINITELY NOT. Staff had shockingly disrespectful attitude and acted a bit too casual for a hotel at this price. Basic respect does not cost a dime. Lessons to be learned here. We can do better, and will, elsewhere next trip to this same area, which is in about 2 weeks. VERY disappointing.

Historic Southern Charm

The front desk rep handed me delicious cookies immediately after check-in. Although this hotel is on the national register of historic places, it is tastefully modern with quaint undertones. Throughout the building Tar Heel history is prominently displayed in neatly framed photographs. The rooms are intimate in size, just perfect for a rendezvous for two. The on-site restaurant is superb. All of the staff members were courteous and displayed true southern hospitality. The Carolina Inn in its entirety is a historic experience that is to be revered.

Quintessential Southern Inn

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet
What's not to like about the Carolina Inn? I first stayed there in 1974. Since then, things that have needed to be modernized (e.g. air conditioning instead of fresh air ducts) have been updated. Just as importantly, the essence of Southern hospitality permeates the Inn, from "Front Porch Fridays" to afternoon tea to always-courteous Inn staff. The location, adjacent to the most beautiful part of the Carolina campus and a block from the bustling village of downtown Chapel Hill, is unsurpassed. Beds are comfy, the restaurant is fabulous, and sitting areas are spacious and varied in ambience.
