#TroverDetour - Looking out to the Mare Island shipyards and Vallejo, beyond, from the trail to the top of the Preserve. The hike goes up the old service roads, now closed to car traffic. Depart from the Education Center after stopping in to get the scoop on where to go and what to see.

#TroverDetour - Once you find yourself inside the gate to the Preserve, the first stop to make is the Education Center - an off-the-grid, volunteer run, fascinating collection of historical displays telling the story of the Navy, the shipyards, the environment and the hidden treasures of Vallejo. Borrow a bike - they have bikes of every size to loan, from toddler to adult.
#TroverDetour - The Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve is a classic detour - you almost get lost if you're trying to find it, or you find it after you've gotten lost - but it is a gem! Spend hours walking trails across the preserve and up to the top for spectacular views across San Pablo Bay in every direction. Nesting osprey, native plants, migrating birds of every feather call this decommissioned naval base home. Don't miss the Educational Center, housed in an artillery magazine. Have tea! Wander the exhibits and learn the history of this base that pre-dates the Civil War.
#TroverDetour - inside an underground ammunition bunker found along a hike to the top of the Mare Island Preserve. The light shining through the ventilation port from a hot California day brightened the cool, dry space - perfectly dry, to store ammunition. The acoustics are cool. The Education Center hosts events, sometimes in these bunkers. Off-the-grid music venue! Would be perfect. There's an open mic every Friday night at the main Education Center building.
