Disembark your Houston flight, and check in to one of the hotels near Downtown Houston; you'll notice immediately the easy access to the city's best attractions. If you're a baseball fan, you can catch a Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park during the season, from April to October. Sam Houston Park is a great place to stretch your legs and get some fresh air while looking at historical houses, while The Downtown Aquarium is ideal for kids who love sea animals and interactive adventure exhibits.

A few miles south of Downtown is the huge Hermann Park, where you can take a stroll, visit Houston Zoo, or explore the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It's also within walking distance of the Museum District, which features world-class exhibits in the Menil Collection, the Children's Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, among others. One of Houston's most famous attractions is the working NASA base at the Space Center; it's a bit out of town, but it's absolutely unmissable. "The hotel is currently under major construction, making it difficult to give a full rating. The bed was comfortable, and while the room was very small, it worked for sleeping and showering. The bathroom lighting is very dim, making it difficult to apply makeup or do hair. Breakfast is available for $10 but is not included and requires a ticket; the attendant is very strict about this. Parking is $30 per day in a garage that is somewhat in disarray due to construction. A major plus is that although checkout is at 11:00 AM, garage access is allowed until 11:59 PM, which was very helpful. We were in town for the Lone Star Regional Volleyball tournament at the convention center, and with Sunday game times being TBA, the extended parking access added convenience. The rail train is located across the street, but there is significant walking between connections. While inexpensive (about $1.25 per person per ride), it can be confusing and frustrating if you’re unfamiliar with the city. We found Uber/Lyft to be a more convenient option."
