Quietly upscale hotel on Upper East Side

We stayed as a family of 4 in a room with 2 queen beds. It was very spacious ( actually enormous for NYC), very well appointed, stylish, comfortable, and quiet. We received a bottle of wine compliments of the manager- a very nice touch. It is not a tourist or party hotel, expect well-off middle aged crowd in designer attire. But no snobbish attitudes were ever detected in any of the stuff, everybody was extremely warm and helpful. Cafe Boulud, adjacent to the hotel, lived up to its excellent reputation, but was rather pricey ( no surprise of course). Affordable and family friendly dining options in the immediate area are limited ( and they are generally not really affordable by middle-American standard), but the main commercial strips of Upper East Side ( Lexington and 2nd) are 3 blocks away with many casual and more reasonably priced eateries. Many of them deliver too. The location is beautiful( think 1890s architecture) and quiet, short walk to the Central park and the Museum Mile, walkable to Upper West side ( Museum of Natural History and other things). We even walked to the Lincoln Center and back ( about 20-25 min each way), but after dark it is not advisable to cross the park, so you'll need a taxi. It is not really walkable to midtown attractions. Hop-on hop-off bus lines stop a few blocks from the hotel, but as a means of transportation to midtown they are very very slow. Overall, would stay again, if couldn't find comparable options on south end of central park

Excellent location.

Pros: The room's large size and furnishings. Outstanding bathroom facility and amenities with exceptional service.
Cons: The price of a Diet Coke glass and with free refills.
Location: Shopping and museums within walking distance or short cab ride.
Very unique and private atmosphere in the heart of the Upper East Side between 5th Avenue and Madison. Well deserving of Relais and Chateaux only recommended hotel in NYC. The Daniel Boulod restaurant lives up to expectations although pricey even for NYC. ($ 10.oo for a glass of Diet Coke (mostly ice) and another $ 10.oo for a refill). Will always stay at The Surrey Hotel on next visits to NYC.

Exceptionally quiet, luxurious and stylish hotel.

Pros: Comfort, class and style
Location: #6 Train 3 blocks away, Central Park 3 blocks away, Madison Ave. 2 blocks away.
I visited NY for a short vacation and wanted to stay near Central Park and the Upper E. side. I chose The Surrey because of the high ratings and I was not disappointed. Staff greeted me politely and professionally and the check in was wonderful. The room was beautiful with a street view and lovely amenities. Another reason I chose The Surrey was the collection of art throughout the hotel. It's wonderful to see the modern and post-modern works throughout. The Surrey is a famous hotel where many political and cultural icons stayed and I wanted to experience this as well. Both of these really make the hotel stand out among others in it's class. Finally, breakfast from the cafe was absolutely perfect.

Great overall

The only thing I found ridiculous was that I had to pay for internet and it should be included.

Customer Service over the top!

Pros: Close restaurants, Quiet
Cons: No free Internet
The Surrey did everything to make my short stay in NY very pleasant. My room was beautifully appointed and lusciously comfy. It is pretty pricey but, well worth the cost. The only negative, was the $15/day internet wifi cost. Ridiculous for a hotel with such a billing per day. I would definitely recommend The Surrey.

This hotel made me feel welcome

Pros: close to central park
Cons: noise from the street
I do not usually travel by myself, but I needed the location, which was perfect, I was pleasantly impressed by The Surrey, it is not like those huge and impersonal hotels, but classy and exclusive, excellent service overall, room service highly recommended for a treat or simply to enjoy the room. I felt safe all the time and all my needs were met gracefully. I know where we will be staying in our next trip to New York.

Very nice size rooms, search for the deal and you will fine. Stores with in two or three blocks for groceries and snacks, small cafes in the area 3 GUYS for one resonable and good food. One block to walk or sit in the park , bus routes one block up town or down town. Get a metro card for bus or subway travel. Staff is very helpful as is the house keeping.

Great service and large room sizes, not what you usually find in NYC. The staff was very courteous and helpful. Very comfortable rooms in a great location.

Bar Pleiades. The perfect place to meet, entertain or simply people-watch on Madison Avenue, Bar Pleiades is the newest addition to the Café Boulud family. Named for the beloved French restaurant frequented by Manhattan’s art world elite of the 1970s and 80s, Bar Pleaides combines the elegantly attentive service of a fine hotel bar with the distinctive cocktail menu of a talented mixologist. Bartender Cameron Bogue has earned a reputation for working with seasonal market ingredients and house-brewed accents. While classic in spirit, his signature cocktails take their direction from the renowned Café Boulud just next door. The bar and lounge décor – inspired by both fashion icon Coco Chanel and the elegant lines of a 1930s Art Deco bar cart – features black and white lacquer finishes, French doors and quilted walls, inviting seclusion in intimate niches. Settle into a banquette and simply relax. Perched peacefully on the 17th floor overlooking the Upper East Side and Central Park, the private rooftop garden at The Surrey is a true oasis. A tranquil, elegant setting for relaxing, a romantic evening or for business entertaining, the seasonal garden features butler service for beverages, and anything else you may require.
