But if you book one of the hotels near El Macao, you'll find yourself off the glitzy beaten path and a little closer to an authentic island experience.

About a half hour's drive north of Bávaro, you'll find the small town of El Macao, but it's the beach that is the true attraction. UNESCO called it one of the Caribbean's finest beaches, and you'll know why when you stick your toes in its soft sand and clear waters or take a nap beneath one of its abundant palms. It's a popular surfing spot, especially in the winter, and you'll find many locals there on weekends. Rent a board or take a surf lesson to work up an appetite, then refuel at one of the restaurants right on the sand or on the cliff overlooking the beach.

For a more primitive experience, buy some fish or lobster from one of the local fishermen. They'll cook it up right on the beach while you sip a cold beer. Many safari truck and buggy tours stop at Macao Beach to let their guests take a swim—the middle of the beach is typically the best spot to dive in, as the waves get more intense to the left. The whole family can enjoy activities like horseback riding and paddle surfing, but be sure to give yourself time to relax and soak in the sun on this undeveloped 3.2-mile stretch of sand, away from the crowds of the resorts. "My husband, two children, and I arrived expecting a relaxing all-inclusive vacation, but our experience has been extremely disappointing from the start.Our first room was unacceptable. The main door handle was broken, the air conditioning did not work, and both refrigerators were not functioning, leaving everything warm. Neither bathroom was properly stocked with toilet paper, towels, or washcloths.We reported the issues immediately. The supervisor seemed annoyed and said they would be fixed, but nothing was done after waiting a long time. My husband returned to request a new room, and we were eventually moved, but the second room was only slightly better and still far below expectations.After dealing with room issues for hours, we went to eat. Most restaurants required reservations 14 hours in advance, leaving only the buffet. The food was very poor. We then tried the sports bar, where we ordered a cheeseburger, nachos, chicken wings, and chicken tenders. The burger was undercooked, and the chicken items appeared unsafe and poorly prepared. Additionally, this resort advertises as all-inclusive, yet many drinks require extra payment with only a limited selection included. Overall, the service, food quality, and accommodations have been extremely disappointing. For the $5,000 spent, the experience does not reflect the standard expected of a resort of this type. They let people smoke cigarettes everywhere in resort including lobby with young children, nasty. Terrible ZERO STARS"

"Overall staff were/are amazing. Be careful of the beachside bars if ordering food and you have a gluten allergy. Not all waiters understood the issue and ordering was difficult. The finer dining restaurant servers are well versed in food intolerance/allergies and the meals were/are amazing. Everyone, from check in to gardeners to bartenders were friendly and strived to make our stay amazing."
