Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails
"Arenal Observatory Lodge is a very special place; it is the only accommodation in Arenal that is actually situated in the volcano reserve and feels quietly tucked-away in the magical rainforest.. away from the touristic hum of La Fortuna town center.. which btw was still very easy to access with our rental car in 25-30 min. The lodge is a nature reserve itself that is beautifully maintained with miles & miles of serene hiking trails; Highly-recommend the free experiences included with your stay; the morning nature walk, the tractor ride to Danta Waterfall (tip: walk the trail back to your room vs. tractor ride back) and natural history talk given by their knowledgeable naturalists in their small, but info-packed museum on-site. We also paid for the night walk which is a MUST DO to see the many reptiles and amphibians who hide during the daytime. It was rainy season during our stay, so Arenal Volcano was barely visible... most days seeing only the base of the volcano, so our mountain-facing Smithsonian Room was not fully maximized (risk one takes during rainy season). But, the clouds parted in passing moments at other times during our stay and Arenal magically revealed its full glory as we climbed-up the 100-foot Observation Tower! The included breakfast at the restaurant is excellent and lunch/dinner is solid too. For peaceful, scenic rainforest immersion with access to Fortuna (with a rental car), this lodge is definitely a great choice."
