Created as a monument to the armies of Louis XIV in 1702, Place Vendome is as much a part of the culture and history of Paris as any area of the city. Located in the 1st arrondissement (district) of the city, Place Vendome is very close to such important Parisian landmarks as the Royal Palace, the Jeu de Paume, and the Louvre Museum, among others. The site is so historic that it hosts the Vendome Column, first erected in 1806 under the direction of Napoleon himself.
