The room counters were sticky and the dish washer was broken. Also none of the glasses were cleaned before we arrived. But the staff was amazing and super nice and the beds are sooo comfortable. I understand there is a lot to clean in the 2 bedroom queen room but it would have been nice for those things to be clean. Also the fitness room was under renovation I wish it was still available. But the room is big enough to do workouts in

"Beautiful old building renovated to elegant hotel"
I grew up in Columbia, SC, and this was my first chance to actually stay in a hotel there after 40 years of being a New Yorker, since my mother is now in an assisted-living home and my sister lives farther out. I enjoyed exploring Main Street, so different from the 1960s, and love the way the Palmetto Building has been transformed into a luxe accommodation. Renovation of my room, on the fourth floor, was still not quite complete--the little cabinet where there should have been a mini-fridge was empty--but otherwise it was a beautiful and comfortable room with a nice view of Main Street, and there was an ice machine down the hall (bottled water was on the desk, and there was a coffeemaker and supplies). The staff were efficient and courteous, and I feel I got excellent value for money--despite the fact that I was a day late checking in because of airline difficulties. I had breakfast from room service on my first morning there, a nice collection of pastries, fruit, juice and coffee, but didn't have time to try the restaurants.

"Very clean and quiet"
This is right off the express way and across the highway from a large hospital (which might comfort some travelers). I was worried that the sirens from the ambulances coming off of the highway would be a sleeping issue but it absolutely was not. Our room faced the highway and hospital and it was so very quiet I did not hear a single ambulance that entire stay unless I was outside. There is a restaurant/bar on site which is convenient and good if you like a nightcap. It looked very nice although we did not eat there - we ate dinner at a favorite BBQ place nearby (Maurice's Piggy Park).

"OK for the price and purpose"
If you truly want a no smoking room then you may be in trouble. Our room smelled very strongly of smoke although it was a "no smoking room". It didn't matter for us as it was strictly a crash pad for Army graduation. I was concerned that they may attempt to charge me clean up fees for smoke that I did not create. It may also be smells associated with cooking as the room had a kitchenette I don't know. Otherwise, it was a very pleasant stay and the staff was helpful and friendly.
