Lakeside Log Home, fireplace, snowmobile trails, parking, skiing, dog-friendly

The Wild Winds is a winter wonderland! Stay in this rustic, cozy log home at the Wild Winds that we call the “Junior” cabin (built in the 1950’s). Snowmobile trails start at the top of our driveway. Cross-country ski on our 70 acres of private trails, or visit groomed county trails only a couple of miles away. Ski downhill courses such as Treetops or Boyne Mountain, each only about half an hour away. Or simply enjoy the pristine beauty of our acres of pine forest in their winter frosting!

There is room to park a trailer here.

“Junior’ cabin has 2 all-season bedrooms and a 3-season back bedroom and sleeps 7-11, and it has a fireplace!

Or consider our other vacation rental at the Wild Winds: "Honeymoon Cabin" has 4 bedrooms and sleeps 8-9 (see VRBO #298533).

Thinking ahead to other seasons? The Wild Winds is a nature lover’s paradise all year round. We offer many trails for hiking and/or biking. Enjoy fishing, boating and relaxing on the lake and beach, just steps from your rustic cabin. Or spend time at our private pond (actually a small lake) nestled in the woods, where we have installed a dock for deep water swimming and canoeing. Or for a little more excitement the Wild Winds is only 7-8 Miles from world class golfing, shopping, restaurants and other sporting lakes. If you like to take short day trips you could go to Petoskey to see beautiful Lake Michigan, or spend your day at Mackinac Island.

The log homes are right on Wequas Lake, and our beautiful private lake is just a short walk into the woods.

Both homes come equipped with satellite TV, washer, dryer, full kitchen and 1 bath. The price is the same for either log home. In July and August we rent by the week (Saturday to Saturday) There is $90 cleaning fee, and well-behaved dogs are permitted for an additional $60 fee.

There are a total of four homes at the Wild Winds; the Lodge (where my niece lives), the Dorm (my house) and the two vacation log homes.

The property was very quiet and owner was helpful and friendly when arriving. It was kind of weird that the owners house is about 10 feet away from the rental cabin. The outside area/grounds were very messy - old vehicles, sofa, trash, kids toys everywhere. The first night we were there it began to rain during the night and then we heard dripping the roof was leaking in several spots in the master bedroom. We were told just to put bowls under it. it rained for 2 days. We looked outside and noticed the roof was not even shingled/completed and in one of the area that it was leaking had been leaking previously because it had black mold on the ceiling and the ceiling was sagging there. There were a few other spots in the ceiling that were sagging as well in the living area. Kitchen has limited items to use there was not even a can opener. The beds were comfortable and the view from the deck across the lake was very nice. You do have to travel on a dirt road to get to the property.

Right for the price
Rokko was kind and inviting. Briefly showed us around the cabin and property and then provided us privacy the rest of our stay. The Cabin itself was not as private as I was expecting, right next door to property owners with a few other cabins on site. Cabin wasn’t as clean as it could have been, but wasn’t horrible. Cozy enough and beds were comfortable. Handbook asked for us to do our dishes, however, there was no dish soap or sponges provided. Did the best I could with hand soap, but I questioned the cleanliness of the dishes I was using because of this. Property itself was also a bit “messy” with lots of random things lying around. Trails and pond with canoe access was a perk. Peaceful and pretty. Was just right for the price and close to all the outdoor recreation sites we wanted to explore.

convenient location and beautiful area but needs upkeep
We loved Gaylord and the surrounding area and especially the closeness in proximity to other beautiful places. Wild Winds was quiet and there were many birds to watch. We enjoyed fishing and paddle boating and taking our kayaks out on Wequas Lake. The cabin itself was nice and cool and the beds were comfortable. However, the whole place had a smell that was unappealing and we realized that the furniture in the main area had retained some bad smells most likely because of the age of it and a previous pet or smoker. The other problem we faced was that when it rained, the ceiling leaked in the master bedroom and the bathroom. Then we realized that half the roof was in the middle of being replaced. The place needed some repairs for sure as many flying insects kept showing up inside. Also, there was a lot of junk scattered throughout the small housing area, including the remains of the torn off roof, which was just a few feet from the fire pit. We managed to be patient with these inconveniences and still enjoy our time there. The family was kind, but when we mentioned the leaky roof and the plaster which kept dropping on the floor starting the second day, we didn't hear back for several hours. All in all, we wouldn't recommend renting until they have time to clean up, replace the roof and place a few pieces of newer, clean furniture inside.

Summer Vacation
Rokko and his brother are very nice people. They were accommodating and helpful when i made a mistake during the booking process which was much appreciated. This is our second time booking at this location and it's sadly gone downhill since our last booking. The cabin itself needs a deep cleaning. There was lots of crumbs and dirt in couch cushions, an odor in the kitchen, and hair in the tub when we got there. All of which we kept to ourselves. We couldn't use the grill because it was completley rusted and broken. The little charcoal one we were given to use was small enough that we had to cook dinner in batches. There was only one row boat with oars and when asked for the other boats oars, we were told we would get them, but never did. The second paddle boat was completely unusable as well. There were wires running along the beach area which is concerning and items left out that belong to residents that apparently weren't to be touched by anyone even though it isn't near anyone's home. The resident there is rude. In our cabin, there was an animal in the ceiling scratching which was nerve wracking. We were told its probably just a squirrel but regardless, it was unsettling. My husband loves bonfires and although wood is part of the amenities, we had to split our own wood for a fire. Which also wasn't a problem last time. All in all, I'd like to give a better review because of the wonderful location. With more cleaning and maintenance, this could be a five star getaway.

Perfect for a getaway for two people
We stayed in the very large cabin and the communication from the host was impeccable as he had to have the furnace repaired but kept us in the loop of communication to be sure we would have heat. Overall, it was a relaxing vacation. The lake is beautiful, the trails through the woods are a wonderful hike, the host is more than kind as were the other people on the property. The deck on our cabin was wonderful as it overlooks the lake and you couldn't ask for better than that. Due to the recent overflow of lake water, the beach and dock wasn't as accessible as you might want if you have children looking to play in the water but for us, it was fine. Our only issue was that the cabin could use a really good cleaning as there is a lot of dust, possible critter droppings, very dirty area rug etc. However, the sinks were clean, the toilet was clean, the refrigerator was spotless, the furniture was comfy etc. I very much appreciated being able to bring my dog.

Define Rustic
I am torn about posting this because Rokko is a lovely man and I would imagine, has the best of intentions. But this property is horribly disappointing beginning with the drive in to the "compound". Yes, there are 4 homes on the property, but there is also an occupied camper/trailer with kids toys and debris, another (stored) trailer, a couple of old trucks, old household radiators, a cement mixer among piles of debris. It was obvious nothing else was done to the exterior of the cabin in some time. There was dirt everywhere and it was quite unkempt. It needed a good sweeping or clean up with a leaf blower. The well pump ran constantly. We were excited to see the log interior and a big beautiful fireplace. There was newer vinyl plank flooring throughout most of the cabin also, but there were area rugs that were filthy. The fireplace was not functional and neither was the furnace. The kitchen's cabinets were dirty and gummed up around the knobs. The ceiling throughout the cabin was discolored from smoke and had water stains or patches missing. The windows were all dirty and had old bugs around them, along with the bathroom counter. My son in law was doing dishes and said he felt water on his feet only to find out the drain under the sink wasn't connected. The bathtub drain was slow, so I checked the drain to see if there was a piece of soap wrapper in it, and pulled out gobs and gobs of long, matted, gross hair. There was garbage in the bathroom drawers and used dental floss. Rokko said he had a housekeeper, (we think it might be the creepy lady who sits by the trailer) but she must only be making up the beds and washing towels and dishes. Yes, the bathroom curtains are sheer. Our disappointment continued to the lake area. There were trees cut down and wood/brush everywhere. Rokko explained that several trees were cut down because of the high water issue, but it looked like no-one had taken any care in cleaning up what was cut. Different height stumps were left all over. There was also other debris all over such as a plastic barrel, a collapsed firepit and an old amazon box. (which we burned). There were 2 paddle boats and 2 row boats available, but the canoe had a couple cracks in it. We did catch some pike and a bass from the shore and from the row boat. We ended up leaving early (after the hair in the drain issue) and cut our losses. Don't be fooled by the rustic description. Rustic also means inhabitable.
