The staff was friendly and happy to assist us. The hotel concept is very unique and we loved staying at the 21c in Cincinnati, however the rooms in Chicago seemed a little worn and dated. We did appreciate the cleanliness of the hotel and the sprucing up of our room each morning.

This was our 6th stay in Chicago, the first at 21C. We have a 21C in our hometown where I had a school reunion, so we were really looking forward to our stay. We will not ever stay in this one again. It took almost 40 minutes waiting for an elevator the day we checked out. My husband went down nine floors of stairs with some of our luggage because we had to wait so many times for an open elevator. We had to call the hotel for our security deposit, and eventually, well after two full weeks, almost seventeen days, it was finally refunded. The barn door of the bathroom led to absolutely no privacy while in the bathroom, and if you tried to close it too far for some privacy, the door would get stuck. Our view was the top of a building next door. They boasted about the complimentary water bottles at check in - but you get two per room, so if you have three people, one of you has nothing. In addition, there were only two water filling stations, and one ice machine in the entire hotel which was downstairs. I’m not exactly sure what the extra $80 fee was for, because other than the blocky rooms of a few pieces of art, there was no other amenities. The only bonus is that Trader Joe’s is across the street, which was convenient. By far our WORST hotel experience in one of our favorite cities.

The hotel is located in a great area with plenty to see and do within walking distance. The staff is friendly and accommodating, which was a plus. The fitness center was disappointing. most of the equipment was either broken or out of order. The machines that were available were outdated, extremely dirty, or both. The sauna room door was locked, and I can only assume it was also out of service. In the lobby restroom, the hand dryer was corroded, which was not a great first impression. I also tried to eat at the hotel’s restaurant for lunch. My friend and I greeted the staff upon entering, then sat ourselves. Not long after, we were asked if we were dining in or “just hanging out,” which felt super odd and unwelcoming, especially in a restaurant setting. Things didn’t improve much once I got to the room. The elevators were tiny, slow, creaky, and felt quite old. The hallways were extremely dim, which felt unsafe when entering or exiting late at night. There were no visible security measures in place to ensure that only guests could access the lobby. I witnessed several groups using the space to eat or hang out before leaving, which was concerning. As for the room itself, it was underwhelming. The features were outdated, and the mini fridge barely worked. it couldn’t keep anything cold. To make matters worse, the prices were exorbitant for the condition and overall experience provided. Overall, the location and staff were the only positives.

I have stayed here before and I love the location and the art vibe. This visit, the room was fine at first but it became apparent that the AC wasn't working. We called the front desk and they sent someone up to fix it and unfortunately he broke the system causing us to move to another room. No big deal. The security man came up and helped us move all our stuff and gave us the key to the new room while he took the larger service elevator. We arrived there first and were dismayed to see a dirty paper towel on the floor. Upon further inspection it seemed that the only way to turn on the light in the bathroom was to go into the dark bathroom and close the door completely because the light switch was actually behind the door. We then asked to be moved to another room and the security guard came up and helped us move again. The thing we found distressing was the attitude of the people on the front desk as if not having AC and seeing someone's dirty towel was acceptable. They finally agreed to make a minimal adjustment to the bill. This is not a cheap hotel and the laissez faire attitude of the staff really put us off. I would not have expected any compensation had the staff expressed any genuine concern for the situation. The staff who cleaned the room we ended up in were very pleasant and did a good job. Having said all this, the hotel is in a great location and the art work is wonderful. I don't think I would stay there again but I would certainly visit if only to see the art.

We absolutely loved the museum exhibits! It was really exciting to have that kind of access to really cool art! And I loved the design of the rooms and the bathroom, especially all the lights being on dimmers, however… the beds were hard as rocks and my mattress was completely flattened on one side. My pillows were pretty lumpy, perhaps from age and over use? And the heater/ac unit was really insanely loud and disruptive. It was impossible to not wake up every time it kicked on and this was a non negotiable issue for me. So while I loved parts of the hotel, the beds and loud heater/ac unit made it a hard pass.
