Flights to Cartagena land at Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG), situated in the Northern Area (Zona Norte) of the city in the Crespo neighborhood. Long a subject in literature and movie settings, the old city was determined to be significant to the heritage of the world by the United Nations. There is plenty to see and do in this captivating city.
Transportation from CTG
Look for cheap flights to Cartagena so you can spend your cash on the amenities of the city. Hotels in Cartagena are located about ten minutes from the airport in Zona Norte or on the southwest peninsula of Bocagrande. If renting a car is your thing, plan ahead—there is no service on Sundays. Catch a taxi from the airport in both the international and national sides, or take public transit to the city center. While in town, be sure to visit the Gold Museum and the steps of La Popa Mount, a beautiful convent on top of a mountain. Hugging the sea, Spaniards built massive military fortresses along the sea and strategic tunnels for hearing the enemy. If you go downtown, you can walk to Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas to view several examples. Head to the San Diego neighborhood to see the old walled city, and visit La Bovedas and the Santa Catalina Fortress. When you are ready for food and shopping, travel by land or sea to the tourist zone on Baru Island for fresh seafood and exotic goods.
