Wichita Hotel & Travel Guide
Wichita, Kansas has worn many hats—most of them cowboy, some even have goggles. Beginning as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail, it soon became a destination for cattle drivers from Texas, earning it the nickname ""Cowtown."" In the 1920s, it morphed from a corral into an airplane hangar of sorts. Workers traded in their branding irons for torque wrenches as the city became an aircraft production hub and gained the title ""Air Capital of the World."" To this day, it produces 70 percent of general aviation aircraft in the country.
It's not all cows and planes, however: Wichita has evolved into an eclectic city with much to offer, as those visiting will quickly learn. Check in at one of the many hotels in Wichita and prepare to feel like a pioneer—or a fighter pilot!
Best Places to Stay in Wichita
When you are trying to determine where to stay in Wichita, it’s best to consider the attractions you plan on visiting while you are in town. Once you know what you want to do, finding a place to stay will be a snap.
You can never go wrong with a hotel in downtown Wichita. The Old Town section of downtown is especially nice—you’ll be close to independent boutiques, inventive dining options, and some amazing craft breweries. The western suburbs are great if your itinerary includes the Sedgwick County Zoo and a heavy dose of golfing. The Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport is also on the west side of town, adding even more convenience for those planning on staying in hotels in that area.
Out and About in Wichita
Start your day at the Old Cowtown Museum, an open-air living history experience that takes you back in time to frontier life in the Great Plains. The true-to-life interactive experience is particularly great for the kids! The Museum of World Treasures is another must-see, boasting a diverse collection that ranges from dinosaur bones to the signatures of some of our nation’s previous presidents.
If you’re feeling the need to get outside, the Sedgwick County Zoo and the Wichita Gardens are both good bets. When night falls, stop by the junction of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers to be amazed by The Keeper of the Plains, a 44-foot steel statue of a Native American chief. For 15 minutes each night, the surrounding ring of fire drums is illuminated, so don't miss the show. Make sure you have your camera, too!
Can’t decide what to do after the sun goes down? Don’t fret. Many Wichita hotels are near Old Town, the entertainment district that's an ideal after-dark destination.
Eating and Drinking
In addition to its nightlife, Old Town is also the best place to grab a bite or have a drink at one of the area's many eateries and watering holes. Wichita enjoys a variety of international cuisines, from Japanese to Mediterranean to Mexican. And of course, no trip would be complete without a little BBQ or the popular loose-meat sandwich!
Ready to go? Travelocity allows you to bundle flights and cheap hotels in Wichita, saving you plenty of cash better spent on your getaway.
