good value, but tragically hip

Pros: Free Internet
Cons: Noisy, incompetent staff, no soap
In it's desperate attempt to be hip, The Pearl forgets some of the standard sophistication generally seen in hotels of all quality today. My first biggest disappointment was the lack of soap in the room for my full 5-day stay. Soap is an amenity that even the scummiest of places provide, but here the staff suggested I go buy my own since they were out. Secondly, the restaurant staff at the hotel were clueless and clearly untrained in how to seat people. I was told I could not be sat at a two-top being just a single, which is unheard of; then the hostess told me to stand at the host station and wait for a bar stool while other customers swooped into empty stools directly at the bar. I ended up leaving. Finally, the rooms are nice, but there are some things that have not been updated since the mid-century, such as the shower, plumbing system as a whole, and the a/c (whose loudness is great for drowning out the annoying event noise- movie night is a great idea, but they clearly are not equipped to host so many people and allow people to sit directly against guest room walls, another tribute to the flaky staff).

Amazing value!

We loved staying at the Pearl. I grew up in the Point Loma area and was able to take my husband to some of my favorite spots with a short walk. Point Loma Seafood is only a couple blocks away!.. And definitely worth a visit! The people working the front desk were incredibly helpful, the bar & restaurant are lovely, the pool is fantastic, the decor of the entire place is amazing. Wednesday nights the hotel hosts Dive In Movie Nights once a week and shows classic movies projected over the pool with service from the restaurant and bar available. The movie is definitely worth staying in for! Our only complaints were that a sink leaked (which they fixed our first day there), the road noise from being located right on Rosecrans was a bit loud (but easily covered up with the sound of the fan), and that the room smelled a bit like the pool outside. We will definitely be staying at The Pearl whenever we are in the San Diego area.

Horrible, dirty and noisy!

The staff was less than helpful. I had to ask for toliet paper and the rooms were not clean. The atmosphere of the hotel would be fine if you like to party and be up all night, however I would not recommend this hotel for families. Over priced and awful.

The Pearl In San Diego

This place is a pretty great hotel. It's centrally located but not in a busy area. It is 2 block from a pier. There is a dennys for breakfast and even a cafe right down the street. I would recommend it for young people who like to go out and don't mind loud noise at night. Every night the place was packed until about midnight. Nothing obnoxious, just a party at the bar. There was an art show while we were there. The rooms are very cute. If you want space i would definetly recommend upgrading from the smallest room to the middle room. The staff was helpful and very friendly. The pool is a heated saltwater pool and was amazing to swim in. I had absolutely no complaints. The main thing that everyone complains about on the reviews is parking. Those people must be very lazy. The hotel itself has about 5 parking spots. lol. But the neighborhood around it is very safe and during our 5 night stay we never had to walk more than a block. literally, it was a 2 minute walk to the hotel. we never felt threatened or unsafe. it was all around a great stay and if i ever come back to san diego, i will be returning. please stay here for a great time!

Cutest Gosh-darn little hotel !!!!

Very small, but well priced hotel. We had a pet betta named Greta in our room. In the pool area were movies on the wall of surfers. They had a special in the bar of Creole food for Mardi Gras including cocktail. Chic mod, Ikea style.

Not a Good Experience

I was excited to stay here because I used to live in Point Loma and was happy to see someone had updated this hotel into what looked like a chic, modern little gem. Unfortunately it did not come close to meeting my expectations. When we checked in and got to our room - there was basically some sort of plumbing issue that had completely backed up into our sink. Yuk! - we called the front desk and they promptly came to clean it up. But that wasn't the end of it. We were promised by the website a large flat screen TV. - true, but it didn't really work. Each time I turned it on, it would immediately turn back off. We were also promised wi-fi, which again - DID NOT WORK! Neither did the in-room radio system. sigh. The room was quite small and while they had tried to update the look - the remodel was done on the cheap! The rain style showers drizzled water that was either burning hot or ice cold - and again, hard to turn off and on as the nozzle turned endlessly in either direction. The room was laid out OK but was very dark and dank. And while the room was supposed to have a king size platform bed - they obviously went cheap and bought some sort of irregular sized mattress for a big discount. The platform itself was king sized, but the mattress ended more than a foot before the end of the platform. Turns out it was only 6 feet long - MUCH shorter than a King and my poor boyfriend spent the night with his feet hanging off the end! When we complained, the staff was quite rude and unhelpful to us. The service was definitely amateurish.

A very nice place to stay

My girlfriend and myself stayed here in November from the 14-16. It was unusually hot for November but it was so nice in point loma. The people that work at the pearl were very nice and welcoming as soon as we walked in. It felt like we stepped back iin time at this hotel the pool was very nice the screen above the pool was a nice touch of class. Akthough we didnt get to experience the bar and restaurant it looked very nice. The only thing i would like to see here was an ice machine. We had a wonderful time though we definately are coming back we even got a Sea World annual pass!

Not a typical stay.

Older motel renovated to have modern feel. Poolside bar, small rooms, but bed was one of the softest we ever had. Minimal parking on site-but residential side streets yeild more success.10mins from downtown and mission beach-near by restaurants, balcony of our room was shared with that of adjacent room-security therefore an issue but our stay was enjoyable. Hoetl show's movies on large projection screen over pool area. Very unique.

I don't know about you guys..but when I book for a ""hotel""...I expect to get valet service and quick room service. They charge $15 for ""parking"", which about 4 or 5 spaces are located in the front and a few more in the back. This $15 charge is a guarantee that one of the workers will help us find parking if all of the parking was taken; otherwise, good luck finding parking in the streets! This is an old apartment, perhaps a motel renovated and called it a ""hotel"". The pictures posted up on this site and in their own site is visually attractive indeed, yet a disappointment in reality. The size of the bathroom was insanely small. It was clean, but something about it grossed me out. In addition, a spider came to visit me in the bathroom as I was brushing my teeth (I have pictures to prove it!) Since it becomes a ""bar"" scene in the night time, it is hard fall asleep at night because of the loud music. Overall, it is a nice place to hang out place during the night time and for breakfast, but to stay for a few nights....I suggest go to the nearest Comfort Inn.

cool place for locals to stay or just hang

I found this place online while looking for a cool place for a local getaway with my girfriend. The pictures looked nice and the internet radio station on their website was very cool so i decided to book there. The hotel and its restaurant/bar are totally odernized 60s-retro and very stylish. The music is loud and lively and the food was awsome! After dinner and some drinks we checked into our room and the front desk gave us a free upgrade to a bigger room with a king instead of a queen just because we were on a romantic getaway and they had the rooms! the rooms were the same retro style and the beds were sooooo comfortable. There was no room service but the front desk ran food to our room anyway, they are super helpful. any locals looking for a cool hotel to stay in, this place is for you. Im even gonna just go to the bar there some nights just for fun.
