Great place next to Central Park

Great hotel and lovely location.

Pros: We liked the excellent executive club, the beds and pillow were very comfortable We asked for a quiet room and we got one! Staff was excellent.
Cons: Coffee in the rooms would be nice.
Location: The hotel is across the street from Central Park and also near 3 or 4 subway lines. Lots to do and see nearby.
We opted for this even though it was slightly more than some other of this quality because of the location. In the end the value was even better because we got the upgrade of having access to the executive club and internet access for free. The club breakfast buffet was excellent with great pastries, breads, lovely fresh fruits (apples, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, pineapple, melons), smoked salmon with all the fixings, cold cuts, eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, oatmeal, yogurt, juices, coffee....

Terrible stay - this is not a 5 star hotel

Don't fall for all the 4 and 5 star customer ratings this hotel built up under its former owners (Jumeirah Group). Since the Marriott took over this hotel has drastically declined beyond recognition. A once iconic hotel has fallen into serious disrepair and is unrecognisable from the 5 star hotel it used to be.  It is clear the current owners are driving out as much shareholder value and running this asset into the ground before they are finally forced to close the hotel for a full and much needed refurbishment. According to some staff this is due to happen in around a years time. The real shame here is this is been done at the detriment of any level of customer service and current customers experience.Customers are not getting anywhere near the standard of hotel they are paying for. I also feel sorry for the staff who are more of an apology network than a customer service and hotel management team. I cannot urge you enough to read the most recent guest reviews before wasting your money (we can't all be wrong). The rooms are now very tired and unloved, chipped furniture, stained carpet overlaid with terrible customer service which borders on rude and at best indifferent and you can see why this hotel was a terrible disappointment. It is our first xmas together so I wanted it to be magical. There was nothing luxurious about the stay. The first room we were given didn't even have a safe and was a complete dive. I asked to move and the 2nd room was marginally better. Determined not to spend the whole 5 days complain (which would have been easy to do) I didn't want this to ruin our trip. The bathroom was almost comical, extremely dated and with creaky plumbing so we had the keep the door closed at night so it didn't wake us. The bath plug leaked so there was no relaxing and bizarrely the baths are tiny my girlfriend is only 5ft 3" they were like 3/4 size or something. Needless to say no romantic bath and I just made do with the drip of shower as I'm 6ft 2". i'm just glad it didn't smell as I heard several guest complaining about sewer smells and asking to change room. On the positive side this is a great location near central park (forget any ideas of park view 99% of the hotel rooms face inward and have no view or overlook carparks or roofs). 5-10 minute walk from time square and right near a sub way making getting round the city very easy. There are also some great restaurants in this area. I certainly would not stay at the hotel again as for the £2600 ($4160) we paid for 5 nights you could get a much more appropriate hotel where they actually care weather you have a nice stay or not. I would welcome a response for hotel management, but am doubtful there will be any kind of refund or compensation for our disappointing over priced stay.

Lackluster service

I stayed here over Memorial Day weekend 2013. The room itself was large enough, but it had several annoyances. The toilet ran constantly (and a bit noisily). The lights are on silly dimmers that are just plain annoying. The biggest beef I had, however, was with the lackluster service. My taxi pulled up to the front of the hotel, and several bellhops were standing around. None offered to help with my bags or even hold the door open when my hands were full. In the lobby area there are always staff standing around, but they all seem uninspired. None of them bother to say hello or anything, and they all just stand around and talk to each other. The main restaurant was closed for renovations, and the bar was only serving a breakfast buffet that was ridiculously overpriced. In a word: Meh. For the price you'd expect much better service.

Very nice and clean hotel. Room was very well proportioned and newly remodeled.

Pros: Quiet
Loved the hotel. I normally stay in high end hotels and would recommend this hotel.

EVERITHING WAS GOOD EXCEPT THE CLEANLINESS OF EVERY DAY.

I LIKE VERY MUCH THIS HOTEL BUT IN THIS TIME THE PERSONS THAT CLEAN THE ROOM DID NOT DO IT WELL, EVERYTHING ELSE WAS EXCELLENT.

Everything was delightful.

Decline in service and morale

Pros: Quiet
Cons: morale is low
This was my 6th time staying at the Essex House in as many years. We had to wait 3 hours for our room to be ready (they were slammed) and the front desk staff was frazzled and not gracious. The nice little extras that they used to provide, they no longer do. They are catering to their more affluent guests who are staying in the more expensive suites and we regular room people are definitely treated differently. The location in the best but not feeling so special there anymore.

Started off bad, leveled off and is questionable now

Pros: Close restaurants, central park, away from times square
Cons: No free Internet, no breakfast, no coffee maker in room
I booked a suite in thsi hotel as part of a "bucket list / wish list" instead of staying in a double bed room in a more conservative hotel. I was disappointed. Upon arrival we could not check in due to a problem with their system. We were given one complimentary drink from the bar. A few hours later (after we left andr returned) we were given room keys to finally settle. The key cards did not work. My husband had to leave me and our kids in the hall to go back to the front desk to resolve. A complimentary refridgerator was put in our room after we were informed the inroom fridge was full of items that you would be billed for if they were removed. I'm sure not cheaply. The mini- fridge was intended to be mounted and we had to literally lift it to open the door to add or remove items. Sometimes we had to fight it to get it to stay shut. General maintence quirks that are annoying when you expect what you pay for, like the double doors to the drink area would not close due to a bumb latch. The identical set oposite of the mantel also could not be closed completely because one entire half was stuck in the wall insert. The glass shower door did not seal so water would run all over the floor. The staff on the other hand were all very nice. We had evening turn down service that was not expected and extra pillows that appeared with out asking for them. The questionable part now is that I forgot a cosmetic bag. I called the very next day and was told I would be called back that day or the next. No call. I called Monday, was told a manager would have to call me back. No call. I called Wednesday and when I was told someone would have to call me back I put my foot down. The young man helping me is extremely nice but it is looking like I may never see my bag or the contents again.
