Dismal, depressing and overheated.
I specifically paid extra for a room overlooking the square. They insisted on giving me an 'upgrade' as it had a king bed instead of two singles. The 'upgrade' turned out to be the same price as I paid but tucked away in a corner overlooking a university classroom instead of the garden square. As a woman travelling alone I suppose I should be glad that it was not the bins or a brick wall. Those are the usual options. Clearly we are meant to stay at home by the fire.Despite the radiator being off, the room was boiling hot and I had to sleep on top of the duvet rather than under it. The room was drab and depressing. The old carpets need replacing with a hygienic hard floor, the shower had two options as you had to mix it - boiling or freezing. The bath was minute and it was too short and too narrow for me though I am only 5ft. tall.Handy for bathing a toddler though. Basically it is a 1950s hotel. I would have given it one star but the first receptionist was nice. Do not be seduced by the good locatiion like me. If you can afford it, spend another £30 and get something decent. For a hotel which claims eco credentials I have no idea why the heating was blasting out despite the weather having got warmer. I was on the 7th floor and for the three days one of the lifts was out of order.
