Fontana, California, is a city of more than 200,000 residents located just south of the San Bernardino Mountains in the vast expanse of suburban towns and Fontana hotels known as the Inland Empire. It was originally known as a citrus growing region in the early 1900s, but today the town is famous for its drag racing. A major drag racing center in the 1950s and 1960s, Fontana is resurrecting its colorful history in the sport. To get a taste of Fontana racing action, you can take Ontario flights to see the popular speedway track on Cherry Avenue.
Situated just east of LA, visitors to hotels in Fontana enjoy the year-round sun-splashed weather of the region. Many people take Fontana vacations in the San Bernardino Mountains just north of town. In the winter, you can ski and snowboard on natural and man-made snow, while in the summer, many locals head up to nearby Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake for boating and fishing. Golf is available year-round at many courses, including a championship level track created by famous golf course architect Ted Robinson.
You can't spend very much time in San Bernardino without stopping in to grab a burger from one of the famous local burger chains. With a large Hispanic population in the area, drive from one of the cheap hotels in Fontana to Sierra Way and for some excellent chilaquiles, pozole, and barbacoa. Alternatively, explore Foothill Boulevard for South American cuisine, such as Ajiaco colombiano, Arroz chaufa de mariscos, or a Chilean fish stew called Caldillo de congrio. Don't forget to order yerba maté, a South American tea made from bitter dried leaves. Fontana is known for its car culture, which is perfect, since you can book your flight right from your car to get mobile exclusive deals on the Travelocity app.
