Hi--I consider the Palmer House to be an elegant landmark in downtown Chicago. I have been there for afternoon tea and have used the spa. This was my first stay at the hotel. The line to check in was so long and there was no one at the concierge desk. It was difficult to find help. I was a couple of hours early for check-in, so had to leave my belongings at a conference registration table because I had to attend a meeting. Once checked in, we were disappointed because the room was small and lacked typical amenities. There was a fridge loaded with treats and drinks for sale (no prices shown anywhere, so we were afraid to eat or drink anything for fear that the items were highly overpriced), but no fridge space for personal items and no coffee maker. There were drain flies in the toilet and on the wall. The shower sprayed water onto the floor with the curtain closed, and the shower head yielded a minimal stream with low pressure. I appreciated the good rate for a downtown stay, but I would had had a much nicer room for around the same price at a less prestigious hotel. We were there for a special occasion, too, so it was a bit sad not to have enjoyed a nicer, better-appointed room.

Wonder old classic hotel with Lockwood, an excellent restaurant. Very friendly, helpful staff. Close to Michigan Avenue and Institute of Art.

DO NOT STAY HERE! Room was not even close to as described on the website. The check in clerk told us we were getting a corner room, which is what we booked. We did not get a corner room. We got a tiny, super small, dingy, old, moldy, run down room with a view of the back of the building and fire escape next door. Customer service was terrible when we tried to ask about the mix up. We weren’t able to be moved into a different room. WHAT??? And then, there was an actual shooting at the hotel entrance and we had to take cover in the restaurant next door to protect ourselves. Do no stay here!!!

Superb central location

Pros: The central location and beautifully restored lobby, rooms and common areas, as well as the pleasant staff. Comfortable beds, instant hot water.
Cons: A guide to the TV stations so I could easily know where to find the local news and weather without having to flip through 100 plus channels.
Location: The central loop location provides excellent access to transportation to anywhere in the city, plus easy walking distance to restaurants and fun!
From the minute I entered the hotel up to my last few minutes on site, I had nothing but great experiences with staff, the facility and the food. My room was very comfortable and quiet except for a few noisy guests in the hallway. The concierge helped me a number of times with directions and advice as did the bell staff when I checked my bag on the last day before heading out to enjoy the city for a few hours until I had to leave for the airport.

The hotel was nice. The bathroom needed some TLC, you couldn’t open the cabinet to get the hairdryer out and the towels were old. The location was perfect. I would stay here again.

Nice hotel close to Millennium Park

Hotel is stately and the Lockwood restaurant offers very yummy cuisine equal to any fine restaurant. The bar area is lively and bar staff are attentive. Robert, the concierge, is extremely helpful. One drawback is the proximity to the rail train running along one side of the hotel on Wabash - can be noisy. The rooms are a bit dated especially the bathrooms. However loved the collection of B&W photos of Hollywood stars of the golden era along the corridors.
