We stayed at Chick's Corner for almost a week living the way we would have wanted if it were the last five days we had on earth. From access to trails, mountain biking, the delightful Sandwich Notch Road and all the fire trails with their logging roads emerging from it this area is absolutely spectacular in fall.
The nature is gorgeous and there is lots of it with plenty of hills, mountains and ponds to treasure if your skills, interest and fitness allow. Wildlife is plentiful, we saw all kinds of tracks around and encountered a pair of moose, mother with her calf at the nearby intersection on Smith road. The waterfall, the hills, the cellar holes invite you into a beautiful story and would encourage anyone to pick up the book "Road Through Sandwich Notch" written by Elizabeth Yates whose efforts helped save the area and turn it into National Forest.
There are also other trailheads not far with access to the White Mountains' Sandwich Range in Ferncroft, one of our favorite haunts this time of year.
The property itself is well kept, clean, with everything in good working order. The house has enormous character with the owner telling us it belonged to his grandfather. It's full of very particular antiques and makes you feel like you are living in a dream.... *THE* dream given its location. The beds were extremely comfortable too. Many rentals seem to be the dumping ground of the worst beds imaginable which otherwise would have found their way outside your curb on trash day but not here. What a nice feeling to be able to crash in the comfortable acoutrements after these challenging days. This would be an ideal location for a large family or several families/sets of friends to come with intent on hiking, mountain biking or kayaking this splendid area. Which is what we did!!!!!!! =)
I am glad we came across this property in such a unique location and will be planning another adventure in the spring to bike the Kancamagus highway one day with road bikes and the trails with our mountain bikes the other. I feel blessed to have experienced a place like this.
I will leave you with the comment another fellow rider advised us on the trails. He had moved from Portland and spent time across the United States even in the beautiful Southwest and Colorado through his life. He told us was that only Western North Carolina on the Tennessee border offered such access to top notch nature and cycling like Sandwich NH. I highly recommend this property!
