Small hotel in a converted old house. Quiet location right on the river but a short walk from most things in old town. Fresh cooked to order breakfast with several choices. I hope to stay there next time I go through Puerto Vallarta.

A gem of a place, off usual path

Pros: Courtesy of the staff, quirkiness done well, quality of service.
Cons: The taps in the shower/bath of the Maria room are a bit troublesome to use.
Location: Vallarta is an amazing place to visit. It's genuine and deep enough for repeat visits, yet a good fit for first timers in Mexico.
We only stayed a single night after arriving in Vallarta in the afternoon, before relocating to our longer term place the next morning. They upgraded our room as a courtesy and so we got a really good deal. The room was quirky, yet fun. The mattress, and linens were top notch. When we were there, the place seemed empty of other guests. I used the swimming pool at about 11pm, and was gifted with a serene night sky, quiet, and an opportunity to float with my thoughts. The location may put some off, because its slightly removed from the Malecon, and the hotel strip, but it's an easy 5-8 minute walk from the hotel to the Square and the start of the shops. Don't let this put you off. Also, it's on a creek/river which we didn't get to explore, but I suspect would also be a nice benefit. In the morning, we left before the scheduled breakfast and the staff was nice enough to boil up some eggs for us to take with us. I should add, that we stayed in P.V. on our last night before departing (also for a single night) and I canceled a room here over a $15 misunderstanding on the rate. In retrospect I wish I hadn't. The other place we got was not a pleasant stay, and I wish I'd just returned to the Rivera Del Rio. Live and Learn. If/when we return to Vallarta, I think we will likely choose the place again.

If you are seeking a unique lodging experience in PV, look no further. A former mansion with only 8 rooms and suites, it sits directly on the Rio Cuale under the shaded trees that line it. Iguanas sun themselves in those trees. Watch them while having coffee on the balcony. It is located in a neighborhood just 10 min walk to the beach. It seems isolated from the tourist Mecca but is just a couple of blocks away. Each room is uniquely decorated in colorful art and quirky Mexican antiques. All of the rooms have been given their own meaningful names. I had the pleasure of the “green Room”. Every surface has been touched by a skilled artists hand. A beautiful rooftop pool and jacuzzi offer views of the jungled mountaintops and the roofs of the city as well as a gathering place for the well travelled guests. The staff is wonderful. Two very good cooks offer breakfast to order and the owner, mgr and other staff are what completes the experience. My 12 day visit will stay with me long after I am home. Thank you Ignacio, Marta and Israel for your interesting and extremely friendly conversations. I will be back!

Outstanding choice for Puerto Vallarta Malecon

Pros: Everything...especially Alex and Grant
Location: The nearby Malecon has a lot of interesting places to shop and there is a nice wine store a few blocks away (Vino Americas).
We normally go to the Puerto Vallarta area and rent a house from a Saturday to Saturday. This year 3 couples decided to go a little early and checkout the Malecon area. We stayed in the Rivera del Rio for 2 nights before heading south. Alex and Grant made this an outstanding visit for us and the other two couples that were with us. Very accommodating and friendly, the margaritas and breakfast were superb and the restaurant recommendations were excellent. Rooms were all very comfortable and quite interesting and the history of the house and the rooms is fascinating. Alex arranged for some of the best massages we've ever had (Rosie). Great area - easy walk to many of the fun places along the Malecon and into downtown Puerto Vallarta. Next year we'll definitely go a few days early and leave a few days later and stay in the Rivera del Rio again.

Nowhere else I would rather stay

This place is a real gem. It's decor is ultra charming and it's really set up so you can get to know the other folks staying there, given that the house was originally built for elegant entertaining. The rooftop jacuzzi is spectacular. Every person working at Rivera del Rio was extremely helpful and friendly. Rodrigo was especially great at helping us find various things (I really appreciated him finding me a couple of bookstores) and means of getting around. Within a pleasant 5-15 minute stroll along the Isla Cuale you can be at restaurants of any quality that you are looking for, at touristy stalls filled with souvenirs, at the beach promenade, at a day spa, and so on. There are also corner stores within a couple of blocks if you need snacks, sunscreen or whatever. It was a quiet location but very conveniently located. My only caution would be that the water pressure was really, really low in my shower from time to time, and the wifi didn't work in my room at all, though it was fine in the lobby/breakfast area. I was in Candelaria, which is pretty far from the modem. Neither of these things bothered me, but I guess you might just want to arrive with a good, flexible attitude because the place was built in the 1960s and it shows a bit. I would definitely go back! It was a super experience. I especially loved the huge amount of space in my room, and the massive concrete pedestal sink with the gold basin in the bathroom. Trippy, lovely stuff. Big thumbs up.

Live with the locals

Pros: Margaritas on arrival, bed, cleanliness, staff, not necessarily in that order.
Cons: A hook by the bed for the bath robe.
Location: It is in a local neighborhood, walk a few blocks to get to Malecon, close to taco stands, shops, Catholic church-730pm mass & perpetual adoration.
I cannot say enough good things about this place. Nacho, Rodrigo and Chayo made our stay comfortable and he recommended places and activities that were perfect for our family. Our room was always clean when we got back, the beds were like sleeping in a cloud, breakfast was great and we were welcomed with margaritas, chips and guacamole upon our arrival. This hotel is like a maze with lots of stairs so if that's a challenge for a would-be guest, this may not be for you. You won't be able to see the amazing view at the top where the swimming pool and spa are. The streets are very safe, my son would walk out at midnight or so for tacos and beer without any problem. People on the streets were very friendly. It is cozy so we got to meet the guests at the swimming pool and during breakfast which was a plus, and you get to share the activities you have done. Unlike if you stayed at an all inclusive or regular hotel where interaction is minimal.

Hidden Gem in Puerto Vallarta

It was pouring rain and dark as I found my way to the hotel. I was warmly greeted by Kriszta, the manager. Wow, a margarita and guacamole with chips as a welcome to my stay. The whole staff here is amazing! Never been to a hotel where staff is so ready and able to help in every way. Recommendations on great restaurants, places to visit, taking time to chat, directions... any and everything. I stayed in the Mariposa Suite and it was a special hideaway with unique personality and comfort. Air conditioning in these rooms is perfect and humidity free. Towels are thick and soft, beds are very comfortable, tap water is filtered, drinkable and tastes good. Loved it! Roof top hot tub is available 24 hours a day, as is the swimming pool. So welcome after a long day of exploring PV. The included breakfasts are incredible... prepared to order and delicious. And how nice to begin at 9 a.m. with relaxed schedule. What more can I say? I will be returning!!!
