Potentially great hostel, but not yet.
The hostel has a lot of potential. It's a good building with lots of space, the staff are friendly, and the breakfast was quite good. However, there are a few annoyances. First, they chose to put 10 guests in one room when there were two other empty dorm rooms. This led to a very hot room, with a lot of traffic. Why not just spread people among the three rooms? Second, the hostel partly strives for a relaxed atmosphere and partly for a party atmosphere (with a bar and even a band). It'd be better if it just picked one. Given that there's plenty of nightlife in Paraty, there's no real need for bands at a hostel. Third, they don't supply locks for the lockers. I know a lot of hostels rent locks, so it shouldn't be an obstacle.
My biggest regret is leaving Paraty for the end of my trip because it meant I had to leave after only 2 nights.
Reasons I loved Canguru:
1. The staff
2. Having staff that are nice enough to drop me to the bus station (thanks Bruno)
3. Having staff that are nice enough to take guests to a BBQ and bar, and encourage everyone to be more sociable (thanks Andre)
4. The artwork and guests’ messages in the entrance
5. Breakfast - it’s all good but Bruno’s toasties are AMAZING.
6. The rooms - clean, good mattresses, enough plug sockets, we had a hot tub in the bathroom!
7. The general vibe of the hostel. You feel like you’re staying at a friend’s house
I will definitely be back…looking forward to seeing the finished London-themed bar.
Love you guys!
