White Sands is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. It is located in the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico. It is approximately a total of 275 square miles with only 115 miles available to the White Sands National Monument and the public. The remaining fields are on military land. The gypsum origins are from what now is most commonly called Lake Lucero. The most active dunes are moving at a rate of up to 30 feet a year. Lake Lucero is on military land and accessible to the public by guided tours only. Reservations are needed for the guided tours.
