Elevators were not working, even their housekeeper was complaining about it. There was nowhere to put your toiletries in the bathroom.

Hotel was not what we expected.

Pros: Liked the easy access to public transportation, proximity to NYC, on site security, and friendliness/helpfulness of the staff.
Cons: Modernize the hotel, add the missing amenities to the rooms.
Location: Located in Newark, NJ. Not much to do in Newark, went into NYC in the morning, spent most of the day in the city and returned to the hotel to sleep.
The Riviera Hotel was not what we expected from what we saw in the photos posted on Travelocity. The hotel staff was very polite and helpful. The room was bare, not very modern but clean: amenities: wood floors (that creaked), one double bed with 2 very flat pillows, one chair, one night table, one three drawer dresser, one lamp, small window a/c unit, small refrigerator/freezer, 40 inch flat screen tv with cable box, free wi-fi, on site security. The restroom was small, the shower "corner" was even smaller. No telephone in the room (you had to use your cell phone to call the front desk), no desk, no extra chair. The hotel itself was an older hotel, evident of the room, lobby, and hallway decor, the two elevators felt a bit scary.

Disgusting

All of the previous reviews are correct. The ONLY reason we stayed at this hotel is because our Airbnb host cancelled at the last minute and everything else was booked. So this was literally our last resort. The initial image upon checking in was a clear indicator of what was in store. The hotel clerk was stationed behind a huge plexiglass divider with a slot that was only wide enough to fit a credit card and room keys through, looking extremely unprofessional and eating a huge bowl of cereal. Meanwhile, a tenant is pleading her case to another worker (who is also behind plexiglass) about how she swears she's going to come up with the money. When we finally got up to the room, there was mold in the bathroom and the cleanliness of the room itself was HIGHLY questionable; especially since we had to kill a roach! We asked for our room to be cleaned and no one came. I wish I took pictures, but I really did not want to stay in the room itself longer than I had to. I DO NOT recommend this hotel! If you are reading this and this is your last resort hotel, pack shower shoes, slippers, pajamas pants and hoodie to sleep in, long socks, maybe a yard garbage bag to keep your items safe from roaches, and a pillowcase/old shirt that you can lay over top of the pillow (and burn when done).

Extreme Adventures Only

Where to start? The staff was friendly and the room was cleaned a few times during our week long stay; they also gave us extra towels and such whenever we needed them. The hotel is certainly trying to become more friendly to NY travelers, but there are some problems. We named our room mouse Herbert, he was fat and well fed. There were dead roaches in drawers, but at least they were dead. We had two women in our party, and we couldn't leave the hotel after dark without a male chaperone...no really, it was dangerous out there! I would recommend this hotel only to people looking for an extreme adventure in New York/New Jersey; it was certainly an extreme stay.

Terrible,

I never thought there is a hotel like this one in the US. Befor our arrival to the hotel we arrived at a train station in near by in NJ, we asked a police officer for directions, he warned us not to go there because it is not safe. " it is full of drug users and other bad people, they are starting inside and around the hotel " he said... We also asked a taxi driver, he said the same thing!! We didn't have any other choices 'since it was passed midnight' accept going or staying at the train station overnight ... Finally we decided to try it out especially there were three of us and we were all men. When we arrived to the hotel, we saw a bunch of drunk people and homeless around the hotel and on the sidewalks watching us. There was a thick glass shield covering the entire front desk .... It was a very scary moment. We checked in and couldn't sleep because of the noise of people and laughing of women in the hallways for the entire night "as well as" the smell of smokes sneaking to our room!!!!! The bathroom was very dirty, the sink was plucked. No phone, No iron or hair dryer... Terrible, Terrible, Terrible...... Be aware of this place

Beware this hotel should not listed on travelocity or any on line hotel purchasing site. It is unsafe to stay there

Noisy and in a bad area

Difficult to get to from the airport unless you take a taxi (we waited an hour for a local bus that is supposed to go right to the hotel, but it never came), the room was bare but clean. The shower was practically unusable as there was virtually no pressure and the water was either boiling hot or cold. The blinds need replacing and curtains need to be installed, too much light enters the room and it is generally very noisy.
