Can’t you just smell the sweet aroma of a freshly baked peach cobbler wafting under your nose? Now, imagine a heaping scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top. Your mouth is watering right now just thinking about it, isn’t it? Well, you could pull a frozen processed peach pie out of the freezer and throw it in the microwave, and that might make you happy…or you could go straight to the source and plan a visit to the “Heart of Georgia,” better known as Macon.
When you’re ready to let the South welcome you to your new home away from home with a heaping helping of peachy paradise, head for Travelocity. With the money we help you save, you can afford seconds—or even thirds. We won’t tell.
Trying to figure out where to stay in Macon? We recommend either of two options. If you are planning on taking the 75-mile trip to Atlanta during your stay, a hotel near Interstate 75 or 475 is ideal. Or you could stay downtown, where you can go on a tour of American soul music and visit the Allman Brother’s Museum at The Big House, the Douglass Theatre, and Grant’s Lounge.
Macon has made a special effort to preserve artifacts of its long and storied history. Visit the Ocmulgee National Monument—it's a tribute to the Native Americans who once lived here, and only a short drive from the city. If the Old South fascinates you, check out two of the city's most historic homes: Hay House and Cannonball House. The 1855 Hay House is an ornate estate that still features furnishings and artwork from the late 1850s, as well as Hay family pieces from the early 20th century. Cannonball House—named for the damage it sustained during the Civil War—was built in 1853. More modest, its exhibits tell of life in the South during the war era.
And while you are looking at famous houses, you might just want to see the Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House. Macon hotels keep you close to this haven for music lovers, and you can learn more about the music scene in the early 1970s. Take in the interactive exhibits at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, enjoy a show at their planetarium, or appreciate the fine art pieces in this family-friendly spot.
No matter what you want to devour, downtown Macon is the place to be. Sample tasty Parmesan-crusted salmon filets and feast on soulful creations. Just remember: after your entrée—every entrée--follow proper form and follow it up with an embarrassingly large slice of peach pie. It's a vacation; the calories don't count, right?
When you’re ready to plan your next getaway, check out the savings on cheap hotels in Macon on Travelocity. You can save a bundle when you book a hotel and flight at the same time. Now ain’t that a peach?
