If you are a fan of the outdoors, explore the natural beauty of Lynchburg along some of the 6.5-mile Millennium Trail. You'll cross a bridge onto Percival's Island on the James River and see an abandoned railroad tunnel. Another popular hiking destination is Crabtree Falls, the longest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Traveling with kids? Take them to Amazement Square, an award-winning, hands-on children's museum downtown.

Eating and Drinking

Lynchburg has restaurants representing many cuisines, with options ranging from tapas to hibachi. The downtown riverfront area has a number of fine restaurants, including elegant bistros with live music, steakhouses, and a fire-roasted pizza joint. You can also tour and taste samples at a microbrewery downtown. Grab a "locavore" lunch at Lynchburg Community Market, which is open Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Virginia wine country, including six wineries on the Bedford Wine Trail, is within reach of hotels in Lynchburg.
