Luxurious!

Location: Longwood Gardens, Winterthur Museum and Gardens, several museums, Brandywine Zoo
Hotel du Pont may be the fanciest hotel we will ever see in our lives! We got a great deal through Travelocity and splurged a little, and I am so glad we did. This hotel is absolutely beautiful, in a regal, old-school-classy kind of way. Our room was impeccable, including a sitting area and huge bathroom, with a deep soaking tub that provided the nicest bath I have ever taken. We ordered room service for dinner, which was delivered promptly and in a lovely manner. We had some problems with the TV service, and called down to the front desk to inquire about it (politely!); it was attributed to heavy rains that night interfering with the satellite service. Half an hour later, we received a bottle of complimentary champagne delivered to our room as an apology. Our package included breakfast in The Green Room the next morning, which we used to enjoy the most delicious breakfast buffet we have ever eaten, complete with fresh-squeezed orange juice. The staff was extremely accommodating, and we felt completely pampered. We enjoyed our stay immensely!

Pros: Luxurious elegance! You feel pampered just walking the hallways. It is so quiet you never hear the HVAC system or other guests coming/going.
Cons: Ice can only be obtained thru room service, mini fridge is only for mini bar items and no in room coffee maker.
We had a lovely romantic weekend. We self parked and were disappointed that the same rate is charged on weekends as it is during the week. Weekends are a ghost town in that area without the business people.

Restaurant Here is TERRIBLE - AVOID

The Green Room in the Hotel DuPont, a beautiful setting of “fumed oak paneling, cofferered beamed ceilings, and gold chandeliers” looks elegant and unforgettable. Unfortunately, the food is overpriced, disappointing, and very forgettable.  The only way you would remember this dining experience would be with distaste.  A large group of us decided to eat in the Green Room and ordered the lunch buffet.  Big mistake!  The salad bar was quite small with the choices being very limited. The buffet included an entre of our choice. Eight of us ordered the pork tenderloin, one ordered a cassoulet and two ordered trout.  The pork tenderloin was so tough, two sent it back, and most had to saw at it with a steak knife.  The cassoulet tasted burned and like it had been reheated.  Dessert was the best part of the meal but the dessert bar was not appropriately stocked.  There were just a few of each dessert.  This is not a good practice when serving 11 dessert-loving women! When the bill came, it seemed extremely high for a $24 (quoted price) buffet and each person had to pay $35.30.   When I called to inquire I was told all beverages (iced tea) were extra even though we were originally quoted $24 each (including one non-alcoholic beverage).  When another diner from our group called and talked to the food manager about the pork and cassoulet, there was an audible click on the line.  Apparently, the food manager was not interested in our concerns.  Avoid the Hotel DuPont’s Green Room!

The Hotel duPont is an example of how a good hotel should operate

Pros: Free Internet, Quiet
Our stay was very pleasant. We drove up, unloaded the car, checked in and went to our room with great ease. The manager made a reservation for Longwood Gardens for us for the next day. Everything was seamless.

A hidden gem!

My boyfriend and I have traveled around the world and have off the chart hotel experience and we were so impressed with Hotel Dupont. I've heard about it from a friend who is an antique collector and well traveled investments manager, who stayed there with her boyfriend for the weekend and rated the hotel as top in every way. She was not exaggerating. I loved the hotel, the room, the bed and the restaurant. I was so impressed with the quality of the food and ambiance. There are many wonderful cultural activities nearby int he Wilmington/Philly area, but if you want to spend a rainy weekend without having to go to far, this is also the hotel. It has a wonderful theater in the premise, in addition to the river walk 2 block away and the restaurant and bars area within walking distance. The only thing you may find not wonderful is the tv set, but most super hotels in Europe don't have them and we were not there to watch TV. In sum, it is a hidden gem. I give it a 10+
