Charles I was briefly imprisoned here in 1647. Gladstone and Disraeli both visited the house. It was used to house captured German U boat crews and airmen during WWII.

Latimer House. The present red brick Tudor-style mansion was designed by Edward Blore, and completed in 1838. It replaced an original Elizabethan house, which was gutted by fire. During World War II, it was one of three stately homes where captured German U-boat submarine crews and Luftwaffe pilots were initially held before being transferred to conventional prisoner of war camps. After the war, it was the home of the National Defence College. It is now a conference centre, and accommodation buildings have been built in the grounds.
