We were given a room in the newest part of the hotel in the back. I do not know if the older rooms are as nice. Our room was very nice and the bed was luxurious. Conveniently located a couple blocks from the train station in a quiet neighborhood, there are lots of dining options close.

The Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam is indeed grand in architecture, “neo-style” design which was the rage a century ago. It was designed to be a bureaucratic office building for Amsterdam’s historic shipping empire. It was redesigned to be a hotel. It’s a museum of design: incredible massive stain glass skylight and windows, etched glass murals, a massive marriage of granite and brick, wrought iron, mahogany. It’s an awe-inspiring rhapsody of design treasurers all worthy of preservation and that’s the curse. You make your way to your room through a haunting labyrinth of doors and maroon corridors adorned with art deco sconces. Far from welcoming, it has a sense of slasher movie trepidation as you open the door to your room with its 15-foot high walls decorated with wall covering of gold and orange vines with a hideous multi-color, multi-striped carpet and massive ebony furniture. You half expect someone to jump out of the shower with a chainsaw. It’s a museum, not a hotel and certainly not a hotel worthy of a 5-star rating. No air conditioning, just an inadequate climate control system that fails not only to cool but leaves corridors and public spaces stifling with the lack of ventilation. The food menu was wanting and dull, the bar limited. (Great french fries!) The staff was eager, helpful, considerate, devoted but not 5-star. Hopefully, someday they will solve the ventilation/ac problem. This is a building worth saving and maybe overlooking its “slasher-movie” flaws is

Dear esteemed guest, We admire your poetic description of our monumental building. While I am pleased to hear that you were able to appreciate its unique architectural style, I regret to hear you felt that it did not succeed as a 5 star hotel. We're sorry to hear you were disappointed by the fact that our hotel does not have airconditioning. Because our hotel is located in a monumental building we are unfortunately not allowed by the government to make great evasive changes such as installing a central airconditioning system. What we do have is a climate control system which circulates and refreshes the air but does not cool it. In the case that our guests experience discomfort because of the temperature in their room, we offer standing fans upon request. As for your comment on the dishes served in the bar restaurant, I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed. ! I will communicate this to our Restaurant Manager so he can look into this. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am pleased to hear that despite the above mentioned issues, our staff was able to deliver the 5 star service that aim to achieve. We hope that you will consider giving us a second chance to redeem ourselves from this experience and prove that we are able to provide our guests with the 5 star experience that so many have grown fond of throughout the years. We truly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Amrath, it was a unique experience it a beautiful hotel. We loved our room and the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful in every way. When we needed anything, the staff helped us with every request. The housing keeping in our room was “spotty” at times but each time we asked to have someone come or something done.. it was done... I would recommend this Hotel to my friends and family and we hope to return again. Thank you for a wonderful time in a beautiful city.

This hotel was far better than expected. We had been to Amsterdam before, staying at a different hotel in the same area. The staff, rooms, amenities, all were superb. Our only beef was the gym and sauna cost extra per day, but other than that, we would definitely stay again. We did not eat in the dining area as we found prices much better just outside the hotel, and a great variety. Amsterdam has a huge amount to offer and we enjoyed the trip as much as last time, even more as the hotel was much nicer. 5* all the way.
