we agree caneel bay is a slice of paradise!

Pros: beaches, food, staff, grounds
Cons: bathrooms need to be updated. in room tv .some mosquito control in the rooms would be helpful (mosquitos seem to gather at outside the door)
Location: in town shopping - free bird creations and st john spice our favorites!
Would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat - the staff, beaches, restaurants, drinks, front desk, shuttle drivers, bartenders, landscapers, etc, are the best!! Every employee works hard to make your stay so enjoyable. Beds were so comfy, air conditioning was effective and quiet (that is VERY important to me). Short drive to the town which we did a number of times and enjoyed the view and wild ride! I would give the general facilities, restaurant, beaches, staff, etc a '10'. The rooms are very clean but the bathroom is dated (it didn't bother me but my husband was a little bothered) and I would rate the rooms a '4' .

weekend at Caneel Bay Resort

Pros: The beautiful resort grounds and the private beaches.
Cons: The only thing i did not like was that when my wife and I got back from shopping in town, there was no where to get any food, and it was only 10 pm
Went down for for days and had a wonderful experience at Caneel Bay. The staff was very friendly and the resort is absolutely beautiful. The rooms were very nice, but could use some updating. Food was very good.

Wedding/Honyemoon-terrible service

So, I never write reviews but felt compelled to write this in hopes of saving someone else the money/headache. I had a destination wedding of about 15 people at Caneel Bay (at Turtle Bay) in August 2013 and the service was shockingly terrible. My previous experience with Rosewood (and the amount of money I was spending) led me to believe that it would be upscale/nice but instead, the staff was rude, lazy, and honestly, kind of mean. And- note that most of the rooms do not have phones in them, which causes a myriad of issues (for example the night before my wedding we wanted room service so my fiance had to walk around the resort searching for a "phone station" to call in our order). Although we asked (and offered to pay more for) a large/nice room (because the bridesmaids would be getting ready there), we were put in a tiny room with no phone. Finally, after asking twice more once we got there, we were switched to a larger room (after being treated like they were doing us a favor and already spending 2 nights in the other one). But, the room issue was just the beginning-The day of the wedding, I requested access to a full-length mirror three times (so I could fully see myself in my wedding dress) and, although a mirror was supposedly "on its way," I never got one. The wedding dinner table set-up literally looked like it was decorated with purchases from the Dollar Store (for example, the main decoration was fake candles-without any kind of decorative votives- throughout the room). The "wedding coordinator" LEFT THE WEDDING literally 20 minutes after the ceremony. The guy that books events for the venue served as the dinner "wait staff" (and was, apparently, put off by having to do so because he threw our plates in front of us like he was mad at us for even being there). My fiance and I had to coordinate the cake cutting (as the wedding coordinator had left- see above) and were instructed that we had to cut the cake as soon as the ceremony was over (before anyone even sat down to eat dinner) because, although we had paid for and chosen a separate dessert, they were using the cake as the dessert and they had to start cutting it right away. The ENTIRE STAFF LEFT THE WEDDING so that, at the end of the night (the entire wedding lasted about 3 hours- it was only about 10 pm), THERE WAS LITERALLY NO STAFF AT THE VENUE- seriously- they left myself and my guests just at the venue by ourselves without even notifying us that they were leaving. I had to go to the entrance of the venue, find a "phone station," and call for a bus to come get us to take us back to the main part of the resort. Other examples of my honeymoon experience at Caneel Bay include: ordering ice cream room service and not bringing us spoons and them being mad that they had to send someone back to our room to bring us spoons (they suggested that we go to the front and get spoons ourselves); At the wedding, when my husband asked a member of the staff to remember to put the drink garnishes that we provided on the drinks, he was literally ignored; When we asked to use a sailboat (which Caneel Bay touts as being complimentary to guests), we were told that the “owner’s children” were using the only one that was not broken (although there were 3 other sailboats in the rental area, we were told they were all broken) and so we would have to wait until the children were done; Total lack of communication/coordination leading up to and including the wedding. The above examples are merely events that are at the top of my head right now- we were there for a week and a half and there are many more examples of the terrible service. Overall, they just treated us like we were a burden that they had to deal with. There was one woman that seemed to work at the front desk a lot and she was the only staff member that seemed to care about anything- in fact, she went out of her way to get us a golf cat when we were running late for the pre-wedding rehearsal. She was the one person whose attitude/service would generally be deserving of “Rosewood quality” (I don’t remember her name but she has very light brown eyes). Notably, gratuity is included in everything so the staff doesn’t appear to have motivation to provide good service… Frankly, I dont know what the deal was- maybe everyone was being lazy because it was the end of their season or maybe I got the "skeleton crew" because the normal staff was on vacation but, in any event, it doesnt matter- the entire experience was simply overshadowed by the staff's general rude attitude and carelessness.

Peaceful with beautiful views/Great snorkeling

Pros: Quiet, breathtaking serene views, shuttle rides all day if tired of walking
Cons: food too expensive, service varies
My husband and I plan a get-a -way each year for our anniversary. We chose Caneel Bay Resort because it was steps away from the ocean waters. We like no phones, internet, or out side world. Or room had a fantastic view with warm breezes blowing through our room, with the sound of the ocean waves. We stayed in Hawks Nest which is breezier than the otherbeaches at Caneel Bay. It had excellent snorkeling. We always found sea turtles to swim with, sting rays, starfish, and many fish! The food was extremely expensive! A fish and chips dinner at the beachside bar and grill was $65.00, without drinks or dessert.! Service was horrible. There was none. We left no tip, because we had no known waiter that greeted us, took our order, or even removed a menu from our table after we gave our own order. The Sugar Mill Restaurant was good service and food was exceptional. Again dinner on the average with no drinks or dessert will run you between $85.00-$120.00. Brunch that was offered each morning was out of this world, with everything you could imagine. Service was good with friendly staff. We rented a four wheel drive vehicle for the week. Glad that we did because probably would of been bored the 9 days we spent on St.John. We drove around the whole island multiple times{19 sq. Miles} and discovered our own fun at beaches and nature. Snorkeled every place we stopped. Loved the wild life. Donkeys, goats, chickens, deer, mongoose. We like Coral Bay side of the island better than Cruz Bay. It was more laid back and had fun beach bar and grill places to eat. Mostly we would get cleaned up after a day in the sun and find our own place to eat, and pick up souveniers. St Thomas is like the city, St. John is like the country is you were to compare the two. We did stay 2 times at Morning Star at Frenchmans Reef and liked that alot on St. THomas. THis was different, but really liked it, but in different ways. If you like peace, quiet, wildlife, beautiful views, snorkeling, you will like Caneel Bay Resort.

Peaceful and beautiful...

Pros: Free breakfast, Quiet, beaches, staff
If you're looking for an exciting, energy-packed, noisy party-place to stay on St John, go elsewhere; actually do not go to St John at all. This place is designed for the person or persons who want peace and quiet and the ability to totally turn off the outside world (they do have WIFI if needed#. The beaches are amazing #7 in all) and for the most part, not busy at all, depending on the season. The food is good, not great, but who needs great. The breakfast buffet is fantastic. The staff is excellent. The rooms are quaint, they could be updated, but not bad, the beds were really comfortable. I give this place a 9/10. What they may lack in modern, is totally made up for with beautiful scenery, amazing beaches, peace, quiet and just enough activities to keep you busy. Young kids love it. Teenagers, forget it, they will get bored. We will go back again next year if possible. I will emphasize again, this is for those who want to get away and turn off - relax, read, sleep, swim, job, hike, snorkel all day, play in the sand. If you need modern stimulation, go elsewhere.

Perfect place to relax.

Pros: Quiet
At times I felt like I was visiting a private estate with a very good staff. If you want the typical glossy 5 star resort this is not the place for you. This is the perfect place to come and relax in a more genteel atmosphere as opposed to the glitz and glamor of most resorts.

Caneel is where I find joy of nature, peace and serenity.

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, outdoor sports, great lighting in bathroom, fresh flowers in room
This was our third visit to Caneel. Caneel is not glitzy and it is definitely NOT about the pool. There are natural wide open spaces filled with flowering trees, animals, peaceful rooms, friendly staff and 7 gorgeous beaches with snorkeling that is ideal for beginners. We saw reef squid, small jelly fish, flounder, barracuda, parrot fish, and many sea turtles within steps of the shore. Food was good and there are many wonderful restaurants on the isle. We seem to be making Caneel a ritual that restores and renews.

Unusual 5 Star Resort Experience

Pros: Close restaurants, Quiet, no tv in the rooms.
This is not the usual high-rise resort experience. A most beautiful setting with 5 lovely tropical beaches on the grounds and world famous Trunk Bay is only a short drive away. The staff was extremely friendly and willing to go out of their way to meet every request. Complimentary snorkeling and ocean kayak gear is available. Very tropical report atmosphere. When they say your room is on-the-beach it is on-the-beach. Very comfortable beds. Within 10 minutes of Cruz Bay for shopping if you like. Excellent food at four resort restaurants and the afternoon 'tea' is definitely to be experienced. There is transportation available but you want to tour St. Johns. Our stay at Caneel Bay was wonderful. All luggage transfers to and from St. Thomas were included along with a very friendly and welcoming Caneel Bay ferry ride from St. Thomas to the Caneel Bay resort.

Great grounds but hotel rooms are ancient and need to be redone

Pros: Close restaurants
Cons: Noisy
Everything about the resort is wonderful with the exception of the rooms which are extremely noisy(no privacy with adjoining rooms). The rooms really are way over due for a major renovation or even complete tear down and rebuild.

Wonderful vacation

We read mixed reviews about Caneel Bay before our trip- and found none of the negative reviews to be true. The location is simply magnificent. Several times we had the excellent Scott Beach to ourselves. The facilities were great. We stayed in one of the less expensive garden rooms and found it spacious, quiet, and with great amenities (including a private patio with a view of the tennis courts). The staff we encountered was friendly and courteous, without exception. The food in the Equator and Turtle Bay Estate House was very good, and the more casual eating places were good also. Yes, there are "no-see-ums", but in this environment it is not reasonable to expect a bug-free experience. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing location in a natural setting, then you will enjoy Caneel Bay.
