St. Croix Island Vacations
St. Croix is famous for its superb coral reefs, beaches, and fascinating history. Scuba dive The Wall, a seven-mile-long living reef north of St. Croix, or beach dive from the shore. Prefer to be on the surface? Go sailing or sea kayaking, or just fly a kite on one of the beaches. No St. Croix vacation is complete without viewing the bioluminescent bay at Salt River, where at night you'll see the ocean glowing and shimmering. International and local companies offer St. Croix car rentals, so book a vehicle and visit Estate Whim Museum to see how the 18th-century sugar plantations operated. Then, take an outing to Fort Christiansvaern, which was built in the 1700s by the Danish to protect the colony from hurricanes, pirates, and slave revolts. When you've decided in which of the St. Croix hotels you'll stay, take in the two main cities, Christiansted and Frederiksted. Explore the historic buildings and shop for souvenirs. Nightlife on the island includes live music, jazz, and theater.
Festivals and Events
St. Croix's African heritage comes to the fore with its festivals and events. Watch the Mardi Croix parade in March with its fascinating marching bands and colorful Mocko Jumbies (mythical African characters who walk on stilts). You'll also see the Mocko Jumbies at Jump Up events in February, May, July, and November, so join in the excitement with dancing, eating traditional foods, and listening to a huge variety of music. Mid-December through early January sees the Crucian Christmas Carnival, where kids and adults showcase their gorgeous hand-crafted, feathery outfits.
