There have to be better places to stay than this.

Location: The hotel is awful, but the location is good -- in the heart of the Gaslamp. Not close to any trolley stops, though; be prepared to do some walking.
A smarter person would have paid more attention to previous reviews before booking than I did. This is an older hotel 'redecorated' in a Scandinavian-spartan style. In practice, this means bare concrete floors, an awkward shower arrangement, and a minimum of furniture. I've stayed at Econolodges that were more comfortable than this. The elevator is painfully slow, and the closet came with a total of three hangers. Finding a decent hotel deal in the Gaslamp quarter can be difficult, but you can do better than this.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your most recent visit to The Keating. As we were built in the late 1800's, we do pride ourselves on the historic features of the property. We do preventive maintenance on all units and this includes the elevator. I am sorry to hear that your room was not fully equipped and this will be addressed to be consistent with all rooms. Again, thank you for your time and do hope you will give us another chance the next time you are in San Diego, CA.

Don't waste your money or sanity by staying here!!

Location: It's in the heart of the gaslight, so tons of restaurants and bars close.
I'm very confused about how this place has received more than a 1 star rating? Maybe college kids are staying here and are too drunk to notice that it's a total DUMP? There's too many things that went wrong during our stay, so here's a list: - the most egregious is the bed linens, which were stained from previous use, and obviously had not been changed before we checked in. There was makeup and and drool stains on the pillow, and hair in the sheets. Unfortunately we checked in, dropped our bags and didn't return until it was too late to have anything done about this. I LITERALLY slept in socks, jeans and a hoodie, cinched around my face, with no pillows or blankets. My boyfriend slept on towels with his jacket for a blanket. We were SO disgusted. - the smell upon entering the room was a waft of mildew and funk. Basically like putting your face in an old cat litter box. We left the windows open in hopes it would air out, but no luck. - the carpet was damp and stained and defiantly had not been vacuumed in quite some time - "espresso" machine had BLACK MOLD in the water tank and residue from the previous guests (milk rings, water marks) -TONS of hidden fees (including a "resort fee"??!) - the lobby music started at 7:15am, playing so loud we could clearly hear all the lyrics and kept us awake As soon as we woke up we bolted, willing to eat a day our stay and find another hotel else where. Management reimbursed us for the night we didn't stay and didn't even BLINK when we sa

BUYER BEWARE: Sneaky extra charges. Give 'em Hell.

Pros: Location
Cons: Don't hide fees. Either include your costs in your room rate or let guests know, with no uncertainty, what they are in for.
The staff was super attentive & the room was clean. That's where the good stops. The decor tries too hard to be cool and hipstery. The worst thing though is that the hotel sneaks in a daily $18.50 resort fee, a.k.a. Boutique Experience Fee. Their claim, which reads more like an excuse to extort the guest, is that this is listed under "Additional Hotel Fees" in the contract. First of all, I've never, ever been charged a resort fee AFTER booking & paying for the room. Major fail. Second, the so called "contract" is murky at best in terms of what exactly one will get charged. For example, every single hotel I've ever stayed at either charges you separately for wifi, and clearly states so at the point of connecting to their wifi, or their wifi is explicitly free, i.e. included in the room charge. Fail. What's worse is that the connection speed was so bad, even after several different attempts at accessing it, I had to use my phone hot spot. Major Fail. Another example is that if you use their LaVazza coffee maker you, that constitutes use of their Boutique Experience Fee. I have never, ever been charged for using an in-room coffee maker. I'm sure that this hotel will claim that it's a "LaVazza" coffee maker ergo you pay. Sorry. Fail. I will call the hotel reverse the Boutique Experience Fee. If they refuse, I will go to American Express and force their hand. If that fails, I will post this complaint to every major hotel review I can find. Shame on Keating Hotel for hiding fees.

modern industrial style hotel

Pros: location ideal
Cons: ergonomics of showers
Location: surrounded by pubs, clubs, bars, shopping, and restaurants. No need to drive. Short Uber to Balboa Park and Hillcrest area.
In the middle of the Gas Lamp Quarter, near lively bars and restaurants. Walking distance to everything in the area. Old hotel remodeled to modern industrial style - brick, stainless steel, modern/chic furnishings. Not for families, as there are no doors on the shower. We were on the fourth floor, one level below PH, and even with double windows the bar and street scene is really loud. Probably very quiet during the week. Just depends on what you are looking for. Super fancy rainshower head, but temperature valve not functioning, requiring herculean efforts to operate, and eventually came off from wall. Front desk staff very helpful in finding us restaurants and places to go. Very friendly.

Upgraded to an unclean suite.

Pros: Great location
Cons: Checking room cleanliness.
Location: Tons of food places. But ask the staff, they had the best recommendations.
After an 8 hour drive to San Diego, we were really excited to hear that the hotel was going to upgrade our room to a suite. We had checked out the suite online and sure enough- there was a tub in the living room with lights and jets! We quickly set our things down and raced out to eat. Got a great recommendation from the hotel staff person and ate like Queens! It was my girlfriends birthday, so after a few drinks we head back to the room. When we got back, we realized that the room was filthy! We found a 3 inch screw in the carpet, a left over wrapper by the coffee table, the shower had soap residue on the wall, and a pretty disgustingly dirty tub. It was almost mid-night so we cleaned out the tub ourselves, opened the flip-flops to take showers and walk around the place. In the morning, we mentioned all of this (and info on the lamp in the living area that had exposed wires -wtf?) to the staff who were really apologetic. We are looking forward to being in touch with them about "making it right"- they were clear that mistakes had been made. All in all- a beautiful room....but it's hard to enjoy a room when it's dirty.

1 out of 5 stars

I was irritated by additional hotel costs for parking  and a hotel tax on top of the normal sales tax. Our room had no carpet, so felt very bare, and was quite noisy (the hotel is in the busy Gaslamp district). An alarm test also disturbed our evening, but there was nothing the hotel could do as it was a block-wide test by the fire dept. On a positive note, the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. However, overall, my expectations were high, but the hotel under-delivered. In my view, the Keating is a 2.5 or 3 star hotel and the additional tax and car park costs mean I would definitely never stay there again.

Perfect pad for partying

Pros: Close restaurants
Cons: Noisy
I wanted a stylish spot in Gaslamp for me (and friends if need be) to crash at for my 30th birthday. I took a gamble in reserving this hotel as I did not know which one I was getting. All I knew ahead of time was that it was in dowtown and 4 stars. When I found out the location of the hotel, my jaw dropped. Right in the middle of all of downtown San Diego's best bars and restaurants. The lobby wasn't much of a lobby, quite small but all the staff for check in were prompt and friendly. Room was clean, well kept, and hip urban modern decor. It was also stuffed with lots of goodies too, just don't eat everything! The shower was out in the open, be aware if you have privacy issues. But this hotel was all that I had hoped for. The biggest con for me was parking, at $35 a nite it is not cheap so factor that in your bill. Also, if you are sensitive to noise, be aware that you will here all the commotion from the streets below. Best for younger singles and couples, not recommended for kids and families.

Amazing..New Favorite SD Spot

My boyfriend and I planned a weekend of Padres games and partying, which also needed a place to crash. We decided on the Keating and were absolutely stunned with the experience. As soon as we entered the lobby, we were greeted by friendly staff, deep reds and the first elevator in San Diego. We originally booked the Deluxe King room and walked in to music playing, a chic design and everything you could ask for, plus things you wouldn't even think of asking. We then decided to stay another night, but as reservations go, had to choose a corner suite. Oh my, what an amazing room. Not only was the shower the best, with dual-entrance, rain fall-type shower head, but a mirror above the shower as well. The bed was the best night's sleep I've ever had; sleeping on that bed was like a day at the spa. I awoke refreshed and any back pain subsided. An in room espresso machine gave way to a pleasant morning after a night of Gaslamp bar-hopping. We came home from the ball-game Saturday night to find cookies and tea waiting for us. I tell you, it could not have been better. If I had to say anything negative, it would be that the TV's picture was choppy and the sound would cut out, I assume due to the connection, as well as the universal remote would not control the DVD player. That is everything bad I can possibly say. It was by far, THE best hotel experience we've ever had, and already plan to stay again. I wouldn't recommend as a family experience, but for a couple, absolutely perfect.

Potential, but needs work

The Keating Hotel is indeed a unique, potentially fun change from the routine. The technology available is pretty impressive, and the deco is interesting, although not cozy. The bed is extremely comfortable. There are problems that have apparently been noted, though, that persists, and will be a real problem for this property to truly fulfill it's promises. The espresso machine is novel, but I'm a tea drinker, and impossible to get a black tea or even a cup of hot water. I did ask the valet who brought a cup of hot water, but very imconvenient. Staff were friendly, but not always informed. The lounge doesn't open until 9 pm, and is closed some evenings. With the lounge closed, there are no onsite options for a relaxing glass of wine end of business day (even in minibar). The breakfast is minimal and hardly worthy of advertising. The main problem is the noise, though, that comes from the street partially, but primarily from the lounge. It's probably not a good sign that ear plugs are supplied in the vanity kit. If you are there for a good party and don't require sleep, this is a fun, unique stay.

Gas Lamp District-party atmosphere

The hotel is a beautiful ultra modern design. Loved the glass shower in the main room- The location is great for partying lovebirds- but with all the street action is very noisy during Friday/Saturday nights.
